Accenture MC vs. KPMG Advisory
Hey All,
Having a little trouble deciding between two competing offers I received today. Pay and benefits pretty comparable. I currently work at Accenture in corporate finance, applied to join the consulting side of the business and received an offer in their Management Consulting practice. The other offer I've been interviewing for and just received is for KPMG in their Regulatory Risk Advisory practice.
1. Can anyone give any updated rankings/outlook on Accenture MC vs. KPMG Advisory?
2. Anyone know if there is a large difference between a Consulting role vs a Regulatory Risk Advisory role in regards to future financial/career outlook? (holding performance the same)
Any help would be appreciated!
I think it might be helpful if you could share the type of work you're interested in. What types of engagements interest you? This will probably help us give some input on how the firms and groups will differ generally.
I'm only a few years out of college with no client facing consulting experience yet so looking to "start" my consulting career with either of these roles. On one side - I'm interested in Strategy and would like to eventually (maybe after Grad school) apply to MBB or even Deloitte S&O. On the other side, I know there is a huge demand for Reg Risk Services at the moment and the area is continuing to grow....
Decisions, decisions...
Secondly, hands down, you should take the Accenture MC gig. Will be better exit opportunities - whether MBA/industry/other firm - and the work will be a hell of a lot more interesting. FWIW Accenture is also supposedly growing their MC practice rapidly.
Risk advisory at KPMG encompasses different things (internal audit, forensic, etc) all of which are hugely boring and not very intellectually stimulating. You'll likely be either testing controls, or ensuring organizations are complying with pertinent regulations. The only plus here is that like you said - the service offering is hot, and they will likely continue to sell lots of it.
Both will offer a good brand name on your resume, but you'll have a much easier path to your mentioned future goals if you take the Accenture role.
I would agree with the_stig on this one. Though Accenture's MC practice gets an unfair wrap on this site for being wholly tech driven, from personal experience you can get on high level strategy engagements. It takes a strong internal network and some luck but it is possible. If you choose to go with Accenture just make sure that you are very active in the searching for roles and don’t let your TFS (talent fulfillment specialist) push you into something you’re not interested in. That being said at all times be polite and be open to work with which you have little experience, you might enjoy it! Good Luck!
Definitely ACC MC over KPMG. From what the OP says, the KPMG gig sounds more like ERS, which is definitely not consulting, despite what they may call themselves.
Agreed. The KPMG offer isn't really consulting.
Thanks all - very insightful and helpful. I was leaning towards staying w Accenture in the MC role and you've all helped reinforce my thinking.
Also - never uploaded that avatar picture and have no idea how WSO hijacked it. Pic is from my linkedin, so very weird how they automatically uploaded it...... but thanks for the heads up on that too. Deleted!
