Recently I made a move from a low BO position at a BB, to a F100 in "corporate finance". At least that's what the posting specified, and the description (which I can't seem to pull up at this time) seemed to describe.
- I have been deemed an analyst
- I assess the risk/reward of product price changes/promotions, and am considered the "support" of sales team (so they propose a certain promotion,and I have to make sure they are not negatively impacting the bottom line. We usually go back and forth until we finally arrive to an agreed proposition.)
- I am involved in meetings with senior managers and regional/national directors to generate strategies, approve large price changes/promotions, protect product lines...
- I am not in treasury though..
However, our department is also called "corporate finance", and there are people there that you know are not doing "corporate finance". At the same time, I am the only one being pulled to these meetings and I am the only one who is in contact with sales team.
What would you categorize my position as?

i would say it seems more like internal management consulting than corp fin (i.e. fp&a, treasury, etc.)
what is your opinion on these roles? can you elaborate?
Still sounds better than back office.
From the description, it seems to be in a grey area between corporate finance and BO, however closer to the former than the latter. The only thing that's stopping me from saying this is pure corp. fin. is that you're not dealing with capital structure.
it's definitely a step up from BO. I was and am happy about the opportunity. I am just looking to find out more information about potential career paths. I guess I am concerned whether the position is "cornering" me career wise, and would I at some point have to leave the company to further my career..

You sound like a pricing analyst which in most companies is part of the corporate finance structure. In fact my FLDP always offered one rotation in pricing.
Remember that corporate finance when we are referring to corporations generally doesn't refer to the same thing that corporate finance refers to at a bank. It's just a way to describe the entire finance department at a corporation that will include fp&a, project finance, treasury, corp dev, financial reporting, etc. It's like what you might have referred to as "fin ops" at your bank. Hope that clears it up.

You're in corporate finance for sure, just not in the traditional "core" sub-sets of FP&A or controllership. Most FLDP's offer many roles in the pricing function.
Same here... I'm a SA @ BB Firm but my role seems to be BO/Support moreso than CF.
