Career as a GMAT tutor / career advisor?
This is perplexing: I was browsing Craigslist late at night and came across a Harvard ugrad in Applied Math/Econ who is offering GMAT tutoring services. It seems like this guy is offering them as his full job as I didn't see any indicators of transitioning to other jobs/school on his website. I wonder why this guy and many other ivy league grads are offering college prep/career prep services - because they could be well... building a solid career.
I've also stumbled across quite a few podunk interview career prep companies where you pay $45 to talk to some VP at some bank or firm for 30 minutes. Are these actually legit and is this a nice supplementary to buy more shiatsu massages with?
I'm thinking $100 hourly rate and being around other 99th percentile people (Manhattan GMAT tutors) isn't bad and you get great work life balance!? plus you might find your soulmate and have 2400 SAT children to whom you can get into SAT tutoring and make a killing.
Thoughts?
well, it's good reasoning. but the career prospects further down the line (unless you make a business of it and expand and hire people) aren't very good. to make a mill a year on 100 per hour you'll need to work 190 hours per week.
but for the work/life, if you work say 30 hrs/week, that's 3000, meaning 156k. not bad atually...
I certainly think you can make a good living from tutoring services but it's all about scale. You would definitely be limited if you are tutoring a few kids a day at $100/hr. If you could setup an environment like the big tutoring services where you have a few sessions per week each filled with 10-15 kids, you're now looking at some potentially good money. Obviously, you won't be able to charge $100/hr for each kid if you're tutoring 10-15 at a time, but you could offer 1 on 1 tutoring for that rate.
I've read that some of the best tutors in South Korea are treated like rock starts. Korean parents will spend a fortune to have their kids tutored by the best in hopes their kids will get into the top universities. I have no idea what these rock stars make but I think it's an interesting business. You would have a steady inflow of new business every year unless you're on an island like "Lost" where people are unable to have babies anymore.

Gmat Classes - Virtual Tutors? (Originally Posted: 04/01/2015)
Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone had ever enrolled in a GMAT prep course with a virtual tutor? Not a whole classroom, but a completely 1 on 1 situation, set up similarly to a Skype call.
Would love some insight before I make a decision on how to start my prep! - Also, any tips are greatly appreciated.
If I understand you correctly, are you looking for a private tutor that teaches using an online set up? In that case I would recommend finding someone who does this full time and has good references to back it up. Also, don't commit unless the tutor demonstrates there effectiveness.
Hiring a private tutor can be extremely effective but it is expensive, at least the good ones will cost a good amount of money. The key advantage is that they can quickly tell you what will be effective for you and save you a lot of time. But ultimately it will rest on your own effort and the job of a good tutor would be to make the process efficient.
Best wishes.
