What is the transition like from Bain Consulting to Bain Capital? I understand that it happens, but what sort of person makes the transition? Do you have to have PE/due diligence work?

A lot of former consulting
A lot of former consulting folk in the portfolio group of Bain Capital--lots from BCG as well as Bain Consulting. There they work w/ a couple companies post close / operationally. Also, folks in this group take interim or perm positions at portfolio companies. More about operating a business than transactions. That's what I know of. To see what the transitions are like from BC to PE investing there you should look at the bios, they have an extensive section on the website.
Lot of people from Bain at
Lot of people from Bain at Bain Cap on the DEAL side too, similarly lots of people from Mckinsey, GS, MS, BCG (you get the picture). The people are usually top of their class and have some sort of M&A or due diligence experience (experience is less important than being top of your class)
