Barclays Capital - Good news

I was lucky enough to meet with the director if Investment banking @ Barclays and he told me BC is looking to hire more than 500 analysts this year. Around 280 SA and the rest FT's.

They target 22 undergraduate schools, out of which they expect to pick about 60-70% of their new employees.

Also if you are at a target there is only 1 interview round!! And you will get a response 24 hours after your interview.

So maybe consider 'targeting' BC yourself, and work hard on those cover letters, resumes and short responses.

They are mainly recruiting for SA right now, but yes they are still looking for FT's to start in the summer as well.

mmm.. i heard at my schools career fair (target) that barclay's is looking to hire 6-7 IBD for the summer, up from 3 last year. was also told that barclay's has a superday in NYC for the second round...

According to the website, they only have analyst openings in tokyo and sydney...is that just not updated?

just applied to sydeny, should be interesting

They are definitely recruiting in the US. They have just started in the US, and if I'm not mistaken this is just their second year recruiting at universities. They seemed REALLY ENTHUSIASTIC about getting LOTS of analysts this year.

by the recession.  Deal volume in Europe and Asia has not dropped off nearly as much as it has in the US, and subprime etc. problems are not as big of a concern.  I had a friend doing S&T at Barclay's in Asia for awhile, said they were growing pretty quickly.

Will be interesting to see if people start targeting European banks more/whether they grow faster than US ones now with all the economic problems here...

Some very senior management of the firm is moving from London to NYC. Most of the top management is American and growth in the States seems to be a major priority...not a bad house to be in given the state of many of the big US houses at the moment.

I'd hesitate before saying that things will be better in Europe if this subprime mess continues to deteriorate. First, the western european economies are closely linked to ours and a recession here likely means a recession or significant slowdown over there. Second, they have major subprime problems of their own - pe I have read that the UK's subprime mess is worse than ours, it just has not unraveled as fully as ours has yet...

You might want to learn how to spell the firm's name before you drop your resume. It's not "Barclay's Capital", it's "Barclays Capital". Attention to detail. It's stupid shit like that in cover letters and resumes that gets most people dinged immediately.

remember Barcap doesn't have an M&A house, though, I have heard that you don't need an MBA or a JD to move up from an Analyst to Associate which is great. What are the bonuses at barcap like?

I've heard that Barcap has a pretty aggressive referral incentive program to compensate for their relatively small formal campus recruiting operation in the US.  I also hear that there is a ~$5000 reward for making a successful analyst-level referral (the candidate has to end up working there).  If this is true, then it would probably be a good idea to reach out as much as possible.

I am very interested in Barclays, if anyone knows a recruiter or a HR email address, I would really appreciate it if you could let me know through PM.  I would love to reciprocate any help through whatever means possible.

txlnghrns, I go to a target. My application was due like a week back, and I just got notified about the interview which will be next week (on campus). Hope that helps!

eecs, i guess my school counts as a target too... well according to that list given... but thanks for the response and good luck

tried emailing as noted above - they told me they werent recruiting.  talked to a lady in HR who kept referring me to the website. website still only shows sydney + tokyo. i think im SOL for being at a non-target. good luck to those with interviews!
