Best cheap way to learn a Stats. Package?

Anyone tried/tested/heard of ways of learning stats packages? I'm out of university, so finding a reason to access them is hard, so will just bite the bullet and learn it in my own time.

Also looking for recommendations as to which ones are better. Matlab? R? Any others you've heard of?

Thanks in advance

T

Depends on what you need it for. Matlab seems to do better for valuations / stochastic calculus and is studied in MSc Finance programmes. I did MSc Economics and we worked in Stata, which has black screen, and is, therefore, hardcore for panel data / macro / industry-wide research.

I only have experience with MATLAB and there is a free ebook somewhere from an Oxford grad who walks you through the basics of MATLAB.
