Getting a job in European hedge fund
Hello everybody,
I am wondering if anybody around here has some experience with landing a job in a European hedge fund straight from undergrad? I am currently entering my last year at the university (BA in Finance & Accounting), having two internships on the resume (first one in a mutual fund as a bond analyst and the second one in a private equity firm as a private equity analyst) and starting part time analyst job at a private equity firm at the beginning of the October. I am living in Eastern Europe, so my languages are fluent English and native Eastern European language. Are there any chances of landing a job in any country other than UK (wild language barriers appear)? Any general thoughts on the European hedge fund industry?
Thanks in advance.
Breaking in HF in Europe (Originally Posted: 05/17/2013)
Hi,
I want first and foremost to thanks everybody for all the very usefull information that I've found on the forum. I haven't found any answer to my specific answer, even after doing several searches. I am a European Student who wants to break into the HF space after graduation. Before some people start hating I want to say that I'm not motivated neither by the prestige or the money but really by the kind of work environnment provided by HF, especially those using global macro strategies. I don't know of anyone who work in an HF, or have any alumni working in a HF at my school so I can't think of a better place to ask questions than WSO. There is some information about how to break into HF in the US but I'm not sure how it is applicable to Europe. There is MUCH less HF here and networking isn't as common as in the USA. My questions are: -How can I do to make my resume stand out ? I'm already a member of the student finance club of my school, I have read several books about trading, I am looking for internships, I am running a mock portfolio. What else can I do ? -I really want to work in a global macro HF and I would prefer doing risk management or some others MO tasks in a HF than sitting on desk at a BB. The problem is that I don't know how to find such ppenings, there isn't much advertisement for graduate opportunities on HF websites. The few opening that I can find are for Quant/ programmers. Does all the recruitment goes through headhunters ? -Do you know if some HF offer internships ? -I'm sure that there is many small HF but I don't even know their names, do you know a website where I could find a more exhaustive list of global macro funds in Europe ?
All the best,
Buddy boy,
We don't have enough info about you to even speculate. What country do you live in ? Do you go to any better known schools (example: HEC Paris or Lausanne, LSE, or perhaps Esade).
Use the search function on WSO's company database (http://www.wallstreetoasis.com/wso-company-database), and you'll find HFs in your region.
That database thing is terrific. Thanks buddy. I'm in the most socialist country in Europe (France if you didn't get it), and I am unfortunately not studying at one of the school you wrote about but simply at non target. I know that I have to focus my researches in London and in Switzerland, hopefully it will pay someday. Do you guys think that I should even settle for an ops role at HF to have a foot in the door ? I know that my background is nothing to brag about and my resume doesn't really stand a chance against students from HEC/ Oxbridge etc
