Brooks Brothers - Prices and quality
Hey I was scanning their website and 3 shirts for 200 isnt a bad deal. Anyone ever buy stuff online/in stores? What's the quality like (i've read mixed reviews), any other recommendations for other brands?
Also what's their fit like... i'm 5'9 typical asian-build...
I need more basic blue/white dress shirts but I would also look into other colors and styles.
Perhaps you would, but you probably shouldn't.
Something like 15/33 slim fit should work for you. Quality is not amazing, but they work as an everyday staple. If you want to spend more, I would recommend going full MTM such as W.W. Chan for a value play or Turnbull & Asser if you really want to open your wallet.
You know, growing up my dad used to talk about Brooks Brothers as the place where big shots got their clothes. I always felt that way myself because it was what i was told growing up. This board looks at Brooks Brothers like its the Sears men's department.
What's really funny is how painfully far away those same people are from being bigshots.
CT shirts have a nicer fit and their quality is slightly better.
BB is the shit.
do you mean that in a good way? i feel BB shirts are good quality, esp for 1st year analysts...
That means they're good
Also check out Southern Pride, Thomas Pink, etc.
Consider custom shirts. Asian guys with lean frames may find off the rack shirts too boxy. A couple good value tailors in HK (Jantzen - cheaper, Ascot Chang - also in new york, WW Chan - pricier, someone mentioned above). Bunch in NY too...
I heard the same thing growing up. I think it was likely true then, but the brand has come down in the last 15+ years.
Fallan & Harvey, custom shirts out of London. They visit your country, fit you, and bring your shirts.
At full retail, it's my opinion that Brooks Brothers shirts are overpriced. You can do better by going custom--for not much more. However, the English shirtmakers are getting spottier and spottier as years go by, so I can't recommend any in particular. I would certainly never buy an English shirt (such as from Turnbull) off the rack. What would the point be? If it's not going to be bespoke, it might as well be made well, and in for that I'd turn to the Italians or Charvet.
There are some very good bespoke options in Manhattan. Geneva shirtmaker is excellent, but beyond your price point. However, there is also CEGO, Carl Goldberg's shop. I think he starts at a little above $100 a shirt. He has a reputation for being a very astute fitter.
Where in the world do you guys learn all of this stuff ?
I've been out of college for years. Anyway, you learn this stuff more from a love of dressing well than wanting to dress correctly for Wall Street.
Brooks Brothers is the shiznit. Abraham MF Lincoln shopped there. If it was good enough for Abe, it's good enough for me.
On a side note, if you're short on cash and in college (as I have been) I suggest shopping at their outlet stores. Shirts there can be like 20-40% cheaper and it will be the previous year's "style", which you probably don't give a crap about anyway (I don't). It's an awesome-quality shirt and it's a smart buy, IMO.
Thomas Pink Shirts are nice.
If you have a typical asian build, stay away from their normal sized shirts. They will fit like parachutes. Go with their slim fit...or better yet, the ultra slim fit line that they came out with recently. Nothing bugs me more than when people wear shirts that literally balloons out on them...and when they raise their arms to the side, they look like friggin flying squirrels. Also look at their Black Fleece line...Thom Browne collaboration. Slim fitting with high arm holes. You can find them on sale at times for $75 or so. Like others have said, BB at retial is over priced. If they can be picked up for less than $50/shirts, then i think its a good deal. But of course, I always felt that MTM is your best option. These days you can have a shirt made for under $100/shirt...some online places (where you have to measure yourself) offer MTM for around $50.
