Any Canadians in real estate finance on WSO?
I've just taken on a new role as an analyst in RE investments/AM at a firm which provides transaction advisory services focused on commercial RE. I'm based in Canada, and new to the industry - I was curious to know whether there were others in real estate (development, AM, acquisitions, PE, brokerage) in Canada on this site to talk about their experiences in the space.
Interested in hearing about some of the projects you've touched on, your experiences, and any tips you might have for someone who's just starting out here in Canadia.
Im currently a student still but had an internship in CRE / securing another one this summer. What market are you in?
I'm in Quebec - looks like you're based out of western Canada?
Yeah U of Alberta. Are you HEC and interning @ montreal?
Threw ms for being canadian. We don't need your peoplekind here
Canada is the best
What kind of cap rates are you seeing on Moose ranches and Maple Syrup distilleries?
I LOL'd.
how do i award you with a silver banana
Hey buddy, thats offensive eh. Try being a pal ok friend ? Sorry if this post comes across to harsh, i’m just trying to get you to be more friendlier eh guy.
I did CRE lending for one of the large banks for a while in Toronto. I underwrote deals across the country. Mostly in the GVA and GTA but have seen some small stuff in CGY/EDM and even one in Newfoundland haha.
Why did you leave?
Just saw this now, sorry. It's because I'm doing this now in New York. Just moved here a couple months ago.
Currently interviewing at a tenant only shop for REIS as an analyst. Will check in if I land the role (final round next week I think? meeting with managing principal). Currently trying to break into the CRE space.
Any update?
I think I got the offer however the svp rescheduled so he could take off to vacation early. He gets back at the end of the month so I find out then. I also got a called for an interview for early next week for an mbs role at a non bank lending institution as well but i'm leaning towards the tenant representation shop because i'll be doing valuation work vs securitization/investors relation work

Hello,
What do you think is the best way to short the Canadian Real Estate Market. I know that the commercial market in montreal is going to go bust ( shop are going out of biz ) everything is for rent. You can have prime commercial space on Saint Catherine street which was inconceivable a few years ago. Moreover the canadian market wasn't hit as the US was, maybe their time has come.
yes... put on the "BIG SHORT"
you cant really short the real estate mkt. you have to wait for it to crash then start buying at distressed valuations.
Your best bet is probably going to have to be to short developers (which I know nothing about, especially in Canada).
I'm assuming your talking about taking a personal view, but even if you were an institution, I don't think Canadian mortgages were packaged into CDOs for you to be long CDS. There are a whole host of other issues, but there's no real point elaborating if the product doesn't even exist.
