Career Advice: Recently met Goldman Sachs MD in elevator
Hello all,
I am fairly new to WSO so excuse me if I am posting in the wrong forum. I really enjoy reading throughout this forum but this is my first actual post so please be patient with me. Last month I graduated from a top 50 school, Northeastern University, (i guess that would be non-target) with a degree in finance and management. I didn't do as well academically as I would have liked (Overall GPA: 3.1), but I do believe that I have great professional work experience through my schools co-op program (6 months Full time) - PWM at BOAML, Equity Trading Analyst at State Street, and Financial Sales Associate at GE Capital. I know.. I didn't really have a clear direction in terms of exactly what I wanted to do in finance during my undergraduate years. My job search has been piss poor and I do not expect to get into a BB, prop shop or whatever you guys call them on this site. BUT.. I did recently run into a MD at Goldman (He heads the Institutional Equity S&T Division in the Boston office) the other day. We talked for literally two minutes in an elevator. I told him that I recently graduated with a finance degree from Northeastern University and that I'm looking for a job in investme... blah blah blah.. The guy ends up liking me and tells me to shoot my resume to his secretary and give him a call to set up a job shadow to meet the team and an informational interview. Ive followed through with everything that he requested. My job shadow is about 15 days away. 1.) What is the best possible way to prepare for this job shadow and informational interview ? 2.) Since I have some sort of a connection, do you all think that my low 3.1 GPA will be overlooked for an analyst position? I'd even settle for a BO, or MO position at this point I just need a job. 3.) Considering my work background, gpa and school what other areas of finance and banking can I get into? At this point I am even considering waiting for on campus recruiting in the fall and networking alllll summer to land a position at the beginning of the OCR cycle although I have graduated.
Any and all advice is appreciated.
