CEIBS MBA - worthwhile?

I am in the process of applying for various schools at the moment for MBA. I am from the UK and mainly exclusively looking at US schools around the T15 range. I'm looking to go into tech or consulting post MBA with my definites at the moment being Kellogg, Ross and Duke.

I spent a year working in Shanghai a few years ago and i'm keen to go back. I'm looking to get some views on the value of an MBA from CEIBS in Shanghai. They score very highly in the FT and many other rankings and have some great stats like salary after 3 years, employment after 3 months etc. However with it being China I'll admit I'm skeptical.

FT has them ranked above Kellogg, I mean c'mon, surely not?

I'm seriously considering CEIBS as a wild card. Its much easier to get into and much cheaper than US ones. I love Shanghai and would be happy to spend a decent percentage of my future there. I'm just unsure if CEIBS is really in the same calibre as some of the T15 US universities or some of the top European ones?

My Chinese isn't great but it would certainly improve dramatically over 2 years. How important do you think this would be for recruiting?

If anyone has and experience of CEIBS or opinions it would be much appreciated.

CEIBS is a great place but it doesn't carry an undergrad division like all the US top 15 / Oxbridge, except LBS/ INSEAD which are top European feeders. That's something to consider if your career may have stops outside of China or Asia in general.

If you're still looking for some data: My friend went to CEIBS a few years back. He's a Chinese-American born in the U.S. with fairly middling grades from an average public university in the States, and he had some (fairly frustrating) job experiences in no-name companies in both the States and China, as well as terrible (read nearly none) Chinese language skills. However, while his family positioning, on both the father and mother side, isn't strong enough to position him into Cheukong, it's more than enough to separate from the pack otherwise.

From what he's told me, all classes he took, except one, was taught in English. Cohort quality is, as can be expected, a mixed bag. He did get a very nice gig at the vp level in a hot sector, unrelated to his family connections, after graduating, so there is that.

Maybe I can answer this topic since I have recently graduated CEIBS and did my exchange in HKUST.

  1. Reputation : CEIBS is widely recognized as a prestigious school in mainland and some part of HK. IMO, it is comparable with HSW within mainland china.

  2. Teaching Quality : My major is finance and took related classes in both schools. I have discussed on this issue a lot with students not just only from the two schools but also with exchanges from the MBA business schools">M7. In short, I believe teaching quality is not that much different among T20 global MBA. The matter is u like professor or not. LOL. Personally, I like economics in CEIBS, and Private equity in HKUST.

  3. Job posting : I can say job posting and CDC support by CEIBS is exceptional. You can see all super star names in china on the school job board. CEIBS is specially strong on finance (especially PE/VC) / tech postings. But keep in mind, 90% of such postings for the Mandarin speaker. If you can speak mandarin, CEIBS can be your topchoice.

Cheers
