Commodities Sales at a BB
Hi guys,
I've always loved keeping up with the markets and all, but never did an internship in S&T.
Recently landed a FT analyst role in commodities sales (energy/metals, paper) at a BB, and couldn't be more excited to begin a career in the markets.
I was hoping if some of you could shed light on the day-to-day activities of an analyst in commodities (not FI or currency). Also, what can I do to prepare myself for the job? What are the best material for learning about oil & gas and metals - for a sales analyst (so I don't think going for an O&G modeling course would be necessary for instance)?
Would greatly appreciate if any of you guys who've done commodities S&T could share your experience.
How in the world did you get through the interview process without having a clue what they do on the job?
On a more helpful note: to understand the commodities markets better, read some of the primers that the research departments of the BBs release. Ask some of the current analysts, I'm sure they will have resources.
Thanks I've read some primers like the DB O&G, Trafigura's recent whitepaper. The knowledge doesn't really stick as well as I'd like them to. I was thinking more industry-specific stuff, which were also relevant to commodities sales. Like hedging strategies for airlines, utilities, transportation companies, etc.
And my understanding is that at the analyst level you are tasked with the usuals – preparing decks, market updates, simple analysis work, helping to take care of institutional accounts, etc. Didn't think I had to state that so explicitly but I appreciate the response. Anyone else?
I'm a nat gas scheduler, so can't shed light on being an analyst at a BB. But if you want some stuff to read before starting, Mercatus Energy's blog has some post on hedging for different types of companies, and RBN Energy puts out a daily post talking about major events happening in various commodities. These are in addition to the standard stuff that gets talked about on every other energy post here.
thank you, because of this post I have been reading countless RBN Energy blog posts that I found interesting
What to ask a BB Commods Sales? (Originally Posted: 09/21/2013)
Hi guys,
I am currently a penultimate student wanting to break into S&T. During one of the school's networking sessions, I managed to get the contact information of an ED, and I would like to follow up with him before my application for the summer internship.
Hence, I would like to seek your advices on what are some of the questions that I can ask him, or rather, what I should/should not do from this point on.
Thanks so much in advance!
Commodities biz is drastically changing. Google can help you....
Hi pktkid10, Do you mean that I should ask him industry-specific questions? Or should I ask questions recruitment/team related questions?
