Computer Science Major - Great (?) School, Crappy GPA
Hi,
I am a rising sophomore at the University of Michigan who is a Computer Science major, but my GPA is low (3.0-3.2). What can I do to maximize my chances for a good summer internship for my junior year (at BBs like GS, MS, JP Morgan, etc.)? What kind of internships should I shoot for next summer (summer after sophomore year)? I can improve my GPA before my junior year, but most finance related recruiting happens in the fall, so I am a little stuck. Thanks!
Are you aiming for a finance-focused role with a CS degree? Or are you aiming for a back-office role?
I am aiming for a finance related role (fixed-income, forex, deivatives) etc. A back-office role is more of a back-up.
Why S&T at a BB bank? Do you understanding what this role involves?
I went from a sophomore summer internship in PWM to S&T summer analyst at a BB the following summer. Hedge fund or Asset Management internships would also be suitable.
I hate to be the dick in the room, but why aren't anyone telling this kid that Michigan is not even a target school for BBs and he won't get anywhere near with GPA under 3.5?
You will be lucky if you can even land a backoffice role, at this employment market.
Good prop trading firms such as JSC are much more difficult to get in than BBs.
Aim for backoffice roles at a big name, go for masters at a better school, then upgrade for a bettet role.
No offense, but the guys replying above do not seem familiar with the industry. They are either still job hunting college students, or 1-3 year analysts in non trading field.
Would I be better off trying to get a job at a good tech firm and then doing an MBA to transition into finance role if it is still attractive to me at that point?
