Confessions of a TARP Wife

Here is an article that appears in the May issue of Portfolio magazine, written by the anonymous wife of the CEO of a TARP bank:

http://www.portfolio.com/executives/2009/04/21/Confessions-of-a-Bailout-CEO-Wife?page=1#page=1

She laments the need to have Bergdorf packages delivered to friends because she can no longer be seen in the throes of conspicuous consumption. The injustice of having to fly commercial, watch Law & Order reruns instead of attending the Met, and (the horror!) the need to now make donations anonymously have all had quite the deleterious effect on her lifestyle and sense of self-worth.

To her credit, the article is well written and at least peripherally reflective. My personal favorite?

I have become oddly superstitious. On some level, I feel I’m being punished for too many thoughtless years of assuming that the trappings of success were earned and not given. I’m constantly knocking on wood or offering little good-citizen sacrifices, like manically recycling or chatting with telemarketers.

Well, thanks for saving mother Earth, honey. But let me give you a nickel's worth of free advice. Take it easy on the macaroni and cheese, because when things turn around, he's going to be looking to knock the bottom out of some hot tail. If you've put on a few too many pounds, you might get to experience real poverty when he shows you the door.

Why do they allow this woman to write an article. This only magnifies the class conflicts going on right now and further encourages the populist revolt against Wall Street. We all know people fucked up. But why have some retarded woman with zero perspective or anything mildly intelligent to say write an article about her joke of a life style.

These woman who attach themselves to rich/powerful wall street guys should only be allowed to shop, make dinner plans, and plan birthday parties; beyond that they should probably pass some legislation banning their speaking privleges.

Are you familiar with the DABA girl blog? Its sort of a new thing that people like to read: the significant-others of bankers struggling to adjust to the financial crisis (http://www.dabagirls.com). I think the authors of the blog have a book deal in the line up plus they got an article written about them in the NYTimes. So in short, what jackofalltrades said: this stuff sells.

In regards to spurring up a populist revolt against Wall Street, I think the target audience of Portfolio are going to find this more entertaining than outraging.
