Delaying start date
I have a full-time offer with a BB. This fall I faced some severe medical issues and had to withdraw from a few classes and drop my second major, forcing me into a difficult position as I may not be able to graduate on-time. The medical issues are resolved and won't impact my ability to perform on the job so that thankfully isn't a concern.
Does anyone have any advice on how to handle this situation? Has anyone been in a similar situation?
If your ability to graduate on time has been compromised, as in there is nothing you can do at this point in your power to graduate in May, I would reach out to HR as soon as possible and explain the situation. I would be as transparent as possible making sure they know exactly what happened, and how going forward it will not impact your performance on the desk. The more notice you give them, the better.
I don't see why they wouldn't work with you to defer your start date, being that you built enough good will as a summer analyst (presumably) to get a full-time offer. Unfortunately I can't guarantee their positive reaction because of the volatile / cut throat nature of this industry & recruiting. Certainly if you previously built some good relationships with senior people in your group, reach out and talk to them as well.
If there's no way for you to graduate on time, I don't see what else you can do outside of these steps.
