Dilemma: asking an MD from another department

I have a question and would like to get some opinions.

There's an MD in equity research for my top choice bank and his daughter went to school with me. She and I were pretty decent friends and she gave me the introduction with her dad. I have had the chance to talk with him a few times and have stayed in contact with him over the past few months and I really feel like I've left a favorable impression on him. My goal is IBD at the bank, but if I don't get an offer, I would love to work in research if there's an offer there.

As recruitment season begins soon, do I mention that I'm trying to get into IBD to him? I don't want to hurt my chances with his department if IBD doesn't work out, but at the same time, if he decided to drop a line for me to some guys in IBD, it could definitely help me out.

I just wanted to get opinions on whether I should mention it to him or just try to stay in contact occasionally. For the record, his department doesn't do formal recruiting. They simply hire when the position becomes available.

Thanks to anyone who is willing to offer some advice and help me out.

If you do end up in ER there, give it at least a year before timing your switch over to IBD.

I'm not sure I explained properly.

IBD does go through the typical process in September/October. This is what I'm trying to get into, but if it doesn't work out, I want to give ER a shot which doesn't recruit formally.
