Transcript before initial interview?

Hey guys,

Since my last post didn't seem to attract many users, I have a very generalized question.

Is it normal for a recruiter to request an official transcript prior to first round interviews? I shouldn't even say first round, because it is only a phone interview. I'm already a little skeptical on the firms credentials, so sending an official transcript before I have even communicated with them seems a bit odd to me.

This is not at a BB.

Around 90% of the jobs I have applied for asked for unofficial transcript during the application process, but I've never had to submit official until the background check process so I'd say that's abnormal.

Maybe they want to extend offer quickly or something.

Sounds sketchy, I have never heard of APEX. If they want your transcripts they can pay for them from your school, otherwise they are just skimming your course list and using it to screen for the role and you are out the $15-$40.

26 Broadway where's your sense of humor?

They do. Transcripts were required for the initial screening, right? I'm sure they glance over them and the C+'s will stand out.

From what I understand, Canadian banks value marks more than those elsewhere. How do you define mediocre GPA? With your experience, I'd think a B+ could get you through.

I had a C+ that was not from first year and a 3.3, but still managed to get an interviews with 3 of the 5 big banks in Canada, but it was definitely a major focus in the interviews. I only made it to second round for one firm because they grilled me on why the C. I can also tell you that I was auto-dinged from the banks that I did not heavily network with. So doing your homework before the recruiting season does pay off.

By mediocore, I meant average or a cumulative gpa of around a B. They definately seem to care more about marks then in the states. ab123, so they excused the bad grades from first year?

I guess I have no choice but to start calling up department heads this summer. I realize that the gpa is an indicator of how hard you can work which is important for banking, but I would have thought that working 90 hours a week last summer would have been a sufficient indicator that I can work hard.

Yeah, they generally looked at my last 2 years, which on the whole were fairly good, except for the one C. I also found that the interviews were quite technical. They need to make sure you know your shit because the training programs are not as extensive as BB's in the US. I do not come from a finance or business background, but I was stilled grilled pretty hard on those questions.
