Going to other universities for networking
I've heard of students from non-target schools going to target schools in order to network. Does anybody have experiences doing this or know anybody who has successfully gotten an internship/job doing so? How did he/she pull it off? I'm thinking about doing this for a couple of the banks that don't recruit at my school. I go to a pretty good target, but a good family friend of mine knows somebody at one of the bulge bracket investment banks that doesn't recruit heavily at my school.
a lot of the good target schools will require ID access and kick you out if caught. If you do make it in, many times the recruiters will just look at you funny and walk away.
You'll need to get lucky in terms of getting in, and then talking to the right guy who doesn't care about OCR. Usually this is the guy who didn't attend the school but is around anyway.
And plenty of kids pull it off - but it's more luck than anything
This is accurate. Had extreme non-targets show up for OCR b/c we didn't have an ID policy. If you act professional, recruiters tend to give you a shot and listen to what you have to say.
Not sure the success rate of something like this though.
Within the UC system/West Coast recruiting, I've seem some kids even go as far as borrow their friend's ID card and wear their name tags to get in. Not the best first impression I would say when you introduce yourself as somebody else different from your pre-made name tag. Appreciate the effort, but most likely the reps that come to the forums/infosessions are alums of the school.
if you're from the west coast but are very interested in recruiting for NYC, would it be worth it to go to OCR at east coast schools?
I've seen it happen many times before, as long as it's no-ID policy, otherwise you'll get in trouble.
The other thing I'd be wary of is if the bank's representatives (whether MDs or Analysts) are school alums or not. For example, every networking session we had on campus this year only had alums at the events (basically, no non-alums were part of the bank's representatives/recruiting teams). In a situation like that, I doubt they would look too kindly upon a person not from the school trying to network. Otherwise, I echo what everyone else said - do it if you can be discreet about it.
