Help With GMAT CR and SC Sections?
Hi all,
I took the GMAT a while back, but I'm not at all happy with my score and was wondering if anyone can help me out when I retake it. When I first started studying, my scores were not good at all (think 570ish range). I did a Google search and saw people recommending Manhattan and after going through the guides, I was able to see a fair improvement in my score. After my first attempt, I went up to the 650+ level, but obviously, this isn't good enough for the MBA programs I'm aiming for (not necessarily just looking at M7s, but am hoping for at least something at the NYU, Yale, Michigan, Virginia, etc. level).
For whatever reason, quant seems to make a lot of sense for me and I know I can do a bit better if actually prepped for it. I ended up with a 47 or 48+ and the only sections I studied were probability and rate questions. I feel that if I actually worked on the trickier questions, I could bump it up to a 50 with a little more effort.
The verbal part has always been an issue for me (dates back to the SAT/ACT days). Reading comprehension is now easier because I've actually started reading more since graduating high school, but SC and CR sections are challenging for me. I've spent so much time on the Manhattan guides practicing and understanding the strategies they suggest, but it just isn't clicking for me. I only got around a 35 when I took the test, which suggests a lot of room for improvement still. So far, I've only used manhattan, random Qs I could find on gmatclub, and kaplan for CR/SC strategies. Are there other sources I should check out?
My low verbal/writing scores kept me out of getting into better schools as an undergrad and I really don't want to have that issue come up again while applying for MBAs. Any advice you all may have would be greatly appreciated. I hope I'm not the only one who has consistently struggled with the verbal/writing sections of standardized tests.
I'm studying for the GMAT right now. I am similar in terms of you in that my strengths are Quant and weakness is Verbal. I have been going through all of the MGMAT Quant guides (to review the basics) for Quant, PowerScore for CR, and MGMAT for SC (I would recommend re-reading at least once, you'll be surprised as to how much you missed the first time). For RC, just practice with the OG and Verbal guides.
gmatclub forum has specific recommendations for each area. I found the Aristotle guide for SC pretty helpful. You can find a free pdf in the world wide Internet.
For CR: MGMAT CR or GMAT Critical Reasoning Bible
For SC: MGMAT SC
Those are the best books and should be more than enough to score in the 90%+ percentile in verbal.
MGTM guides are good but there's a lot of reading.
