How good does the Master in accountancy look right now?
I'm currently a finance major with a 3.2 GPA at a top 15 undergrad ranked bus school and have recently exhausted every resource I have to try and land the "golden" BB IB internship. My goal is to make it eventually to a bulge bracket or top tier MM IB analyst position following graduation. This week after several interviews I received offers from two (not ideal but legitimate) firms which left me with 3 options.
1.) Small Regional Investment Banking Services Firm (middle market, core business is just giving fair valuation opinions)
2.) Bloomberg Global Data Internship Program (Not ideal, but hey big name and maybe I could make the argument I follow the markets)
3.) Hunker down do summer school and pursue a fifth year masters in accounting
Can anyone give me some insight into which would best position myself as a stronger candidate for I-B come next winter? My greatest fear, like many others, is being stamped an accountant for the rest of my life seeing everything in debits and credits. Thanks.
The MM IB Firm is clearly your best bet. If you're not at a target and have that GPA, then a BB/High-tier MM should be a dream, not a target for you (apply and do your best to get into one, but realize that the odds are pretty low). The MM IB will provide you with the most relevant experience and will look better than the others when recruiting begins
Hi..erm a little digression; "top 15 undergrad b-school" doesn't mean a thing; agree with youdownwithSEC about BB being a reach. The masters won't be very useful so try to shoot for the small MM... "Experience" trumps "brand name" everytime
MAcc is great if you want to do auditing. I never heard of anyone who went MAcc to IB directly.
WHat is a top 15 ug Business program? I have never heard of that ranking.
See U.S. News Rankings its a top tier Liberal Arts school
MM IB this summer. BB SA next. MAcc for fifth year.
"top 15 undergrad ranked bus school"
There is one and only one undergraduate business school in terms of wall street.
So Liberal Arts Colleges now have business schools? Did I miss something?
seriously, if your school's not one of the top 5 in whatever field its in, don't even mention it...top 15 means your school's not top 10, otherwise, you would have said top 10. in my honest opinion, that's a pretty shitty school
anyway, don't take Bloomberg and a summer at your non-target b-school seems like a waste of $. one of my friends did his sophomore summer gig at Bloomberg data stuff (NJ office i think)...he hated it, it was all just database thing...no real work experience. go with your regional valuation firm. i think it sounds decent for your summer. good luck
Bullshit. I've never heard of a good LA school w/ an ug bschool. I'll even run down the list for you, stop me when I hit your school: amherst, williams, pomona, middlebury, wesleyan... past that you're second tier. A little cross checking, and I'm going to guess you go to WUSL or University of Richmond (or is Emory a LA school?). Decent schools, but not exactly feeders to wall street. With your GPA, be thankful you got an offer to a MM bank and run with it. And definitely don't do a the accounting master unless you want to stick yourself in big 4.
oh, and London quit being an ignorant ass, just because only five schools matter in england doesn't mean that's how it functions here. The ivy league stretches further than that.
um...I need to clarify this...I am an American and i study in the U.S...I just got my BB SA gig in London, that's all.
Emory Goizueta is a decent school. U of Richmond on the other hand is place full of snobs who are quite delusional thinking that they go to a Tier1 school. in all seriousness, your school ranking sucks so don't bring it up here. and your GPA is embarrassing.
