How much do portfolio analysts know about their sector?
Say you are a mutual fund or portfolio analyst and are assigned coverage of tech stocks. You report to the head manager and he trusts you to make good recommendations. How much are you expected to know about technology in this situation? Would it be helpful to have had experience in software or programming, or would it suffice to know about the basic operations of the company and be able to DCF, comps, etc?
I'm assuming your mutual fund/portfolio group would have ~10 analysts and you work at a place like Fidelity/PNC/Oppenheimer.
