How to make the tough jump from WM to banking?
I'm from a low semi-target school in the north east that has a well known business program and sends multiple kids to IB firms each year. I have solid grades, 3.7, as well as solid knowledge about the banking industry and I am trying to build up a solid network of guys to help leverage me onto Wall Street next summer of my junior year.
I recently interned at BB WM office in Boston during my sophomore year, and will be going back in the fall again. I am really trying to make the switch over to Capital Markets at the same firm yet I am struggling and nervous that it wont be possible? I have a genuine interest and deep passion fro both valuation and following the markets day by day so I thought that Capital Markets would be the best avenue for success.
Any recommendations on how to make the switch into ECM or DCM from WM?
The jump isn't "tough" at least not relative to everyone else's jump, still difficult nonetheless. Try networking within the firm. Reach out to people in ECM/DCM (caution here, some people don't like it). Talk to recruiters and see what they look for and how you can improve your resume/cover letter/interview skills. Find some transferable skills in your current position and find out how you can leverage them.
