Internal Approval

So about a week and a half ago, I interviewed with the CAO of the firm for a SA job. It all went fine, and it was pretty much approved on the spot. The CAO said he would have to check with the COO and sort things out. A week and half passed, I didn't hear back so I emailed him instead.

He replied saying that he has put the position on hold as he needs to get "internal approval". What exactly does he mean this? Is he getting approval from the headquarters?

Probably compliance.

That would be a wild guess... For my SA gig it took around 3 weeks which is alright for a BB, for my current fund it took around 3-4 months.

Anytime you hear something like that, the safest thing to do is to assume that (unfortunately) it will probably not work out due to the fact that the guy has other shit to deal with. Keep looking elsewhere to cover your ass, can't hurt

Could be checking to see if they have approval to add head count and bring on another intern.

That would make sense, he did mention already having another intern there. So it's best I assume nothing will come out of this?

I haven't replied to his email yet, but would it be unreasonable of me to ask him to refer me to someone else in the meantime?

I really wouldn't ask to be referred to someone else until they turn you down for the original job. Keep following up at this point
