Job Title?
Hi,
I've been active for a couple of years in PE/VC and have had (many) different job titles. Work includes mostly the same job activities (sourcing, screening, dd & hands on work etc) but - also depending on region - the titles vary, even compared to competitors.
Some PE/VC have the associate, consultant, vice/president, director/partner path, and some have the analyst, manager, director, partner etc path. Including investment manager.
Now in a hands on environment, I doubt if the term investment manager is used correctly. Investment managers (I believe) focus on basically managing a portfolio (from a distance). What is the most suitable title for members of PE/VC working hands-on in portfolio companies, were there is no such structure as described above? Investment consultant?
Its kind of open. Advisor, associate, liaison...
I typically see Operating Partner as the title but they're usually high level c-suite guys who join PE/VC funds to work in depth with portfolio companies or even jump into full time roles. I suppose below partner level you'd be Op Associate? But I can't remember seeing that before. Investment Advisor/Consultant says something completely outside of PE to me.
Associate.
Is it associate? I've had one job where the official title was Investment Manager. Isnt that the same as associate but higher level?
IM seems like an AM title, not a hands on operator. Associate is more general. .
Whats an AM in this context?
