Fixed Income Strategy Role

I'm working in this role FT starting later this year out of undergrad at a large AM only (Fidelity/BlackRock/Vanguard/SSGA). I know what to expect more or less but what are the exit opps? Would it be better to continue in this role and work up the PMG ladder or to go into S&T? My long term goal is to go to an M7 and maybe break into PE but idk if this is possible.

Also I'm posting this here because the AM forum is literally dead

almost every fixed income strategist that started the same time as i did at my first BB firm are now either rates swap traders, or hedge fund managers. it is a great career path...if you can find the right group to join. strategy is a place to learn the business without the pressure to put up P&L every day

I am a proprietary Govt Bond Trader...i post my comments on the mkt intraday at twitter...and longer articles on my blog. I've accumulated a lot of educational info in these blogs..so i highly recommend checking them out http://govttrader.blogspot.com

So are FI strategists similar to desk analysts? Are FI strategists typically quant positions or do fundamental strats also exist?

At my bank people tend to have quantitative backgrounds, but it's not exactly a quant-only role. You have to be better at math than most people, but you're not writing algos. A lot of it ties in with global macro.
