Hedge Funds, Asset Management, Trading. How do I break into the industry after undergrad?
My goal is to be a Portfolio Manager/Trader for a hedge fund, what is the usual career path to get there?

Want to get into hedge-funds... (Originally Posted: 05/30/2013)
Hi All, 2 part-question...
I live in NYC, and I'm looking to break into an entry-level Wall Street role that will allow me to transition to a Money Management Firm or Hedge Fund as a trader/analyst (NOT as a Quant, though).
I currently have a BA in business economics, and a years-worth of work experience (in a business consulting capacity).
I'm considering going back to school for a Masters degree (and perhaps a PHD), so that I'll be qualified to get a top tier trader/analyst job on Wall Street.
(In the meanwhile, of course, I'll be looking for entry-level finance jobs with my BA degree).
My question to you all: Given my goal, what should I get a Master's degree in?
What're the best types of entry-level positions that will allow me to transition into a role as a trader/analyst at a Money Management Firm or Hedge Fund?
Thanks!,
Chris in NYC
Don't get a Master's.
To a hedge fund? Get to the front office. Equity research or investment banking.
You really need to narrow down the type of strategy you're interested in first before investing in higher education.
Looking for advice breaking into Hedge Funds (Originally Posted: 07/03/2014)
Hey, All!
I'm a 28 year old marketing and product management guy looking to make a career change.
I'm here to learn more about my current dream- being a Hedge Fund trader.
Career-wise, I've most recently myself as director of Product Management and R&D at a technology firm.
I left that job back in January after almost jumping off the building due to extreme boredom and constantly butting heads with the CEO. Long story short, I'm ready for a change.
I went to college for marketing, but I'm thinking about going back and changing my major to Finance (didn't finish college due to family issues), and then trying to get a job at a Hedge Fund as an analyst, and working up to manager.
I live in Palm Beach, FL.
What do you guys think about that plan? Am I on the right track? Any help/advice is appreciated.
Has anyone here been in my situation?
