Mays to McCombs Transfer
Hey Guys,
I just wanted to throw my current dilemma out there and see if anyone is willing to give out any advice. I'm a rising junior at Mays with a decent GPA (3.6), multiple internships and leadership in student organizations. The problem is I am extremely unhappy at my current university and would like to transfer to McCombs. The deadline to transfer has passed and I would have to apply during the end of my junior year which isn't exactly ideal. Is transferring this late in the game unwise? I also understand that some people have taken a year off to intern/work and then transfer to complete the remaining two years. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance for your help!

Why transfer when you only would have 1 year to go? I doubt everything would transfer, so you'd have to do 2 at UT. I've also heard it's tough to transfer into McCombs without a very high GPA (3.8ish is what I've heard), but that may be totally wrong.
tmur Academically everything is going well. Socially I feel extremely out of place in this conservative, close-minded school. The McCombs job placement outside of Texas is also substantially better. Ultimately I feel I would have more opportunities and simply be happier in Austin.
jrt336 If I were to transfer I would have to remain in residence for two years to receive a degree at McCombs. It's true, transferring is rumored to be extremely difficult.
I transferred in from a lesser school than A&M (whoops) w/ a 3.9 & 32 hrs.
ECs were weak, though; b.s. involvement in my school's investment club and work as a volunteer tutor for a shitty school district. Had no work exp. back then either.
Though, I think it is mostly a GPA game.
OP is at Texas A&M (mays)..not SMU (cox).
I don't think it's worth it man. I know in your spot you see all the benefit but we're talking about 1 year and you're done. I think it's true that McCombs has better national placement but Aggie network is really big/strong. Spend half the effort it would take to transfer and put it into networking and youll get where you want to be. I went to a much smaller TX school for undergrad and know plenty of people that ended up in new york, california, etc. If they can do it with a global living alumni base that is damn near the A&M undergrad enrollment, you can do it too.
Not that you asked, but If i got resume that showed someone transferred 80 miles after their junior year I would have some serious questions for the candidate. If you had transferred after your freshman year, I get it but saying you didnt like the culture after three years is on you, not them.

Cartwright I guess I never really considered how an interviewer would perceive a transfer like that. I better just make the best of my situation and use my resources to get out after graduation. Thanks for the incite.
Not sure what you want to do after UG, but I concur with what Cartwright said. The aggie network is a powerful thing in Texas. They have aggie happy hours in Houston all the damn time!! I've been to one with my wife and it was ridiculous (she's an aggie alum).
I'd like to get involved in either consulting or Ibanking. I know it'll be difficult, despite the extensive network in Texas. I'll be studying abroad in a target school in Germany so hopefully I can land a top internship through their career center if things don't work out Stateside. I'm pretty determined to get out of Tejas and work in Cali, NY, Chi or maybe overseas (dual citizenship).
