What are NU's co-ops like in terms of IB? I know they're a non-target but do you know anyone who did FO for their co-op?
Im not in the US at the moment but I will be spending time in NU on an international transfer, including doing a co-op in the future..
Any info you could give me would be great!
One of my friends goes to NU he is a music industry major that is all I have to add.
I have a friend who is working at Goldman Sachs next semester on their trading floor. We get placements in Merrill Lynch, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, UBS. We also have some consulting/accounting firms that hire us (Deloitte, Ernst & Young etc-). A lot of our students get rehired by these firms at the end of their time at Northeastern, which is definitely a plus.
Quite a few front office roles, which makes us slightly more attractive than other non-targets. One of the other routes that students go down is going to b-school as we end up with 18+ months of experience upon graduation, which is close to the 2 years practically required.
That's brilliant! I am not that familiar with the US system but always figured non-target FO internships were a 'blue moon' thing.. I'm in a similar boat to you BO internship wise, I have an Ops one this summer in Europe so hopefully I can leverage that to FO ones similar to those you mentioned..
Advice #1 Network...chances are you will need to have some sort of an in to get your resume in front of someone Advice #2 Prepare...the interview process for ibanking positions is quite different so if you know your technicals and can walk the interviewers through your reasoning no one will really care about that back office position finally #3 try to sell the back office position...maybe its a certain thing you wanted to learn etc...by no means let your interviewer know that you settled for less
I'm familiar with the co-op program there, have completed 2 co-ops myself and about to start a 3rd in the Spring. If this is your 1st co-op, I wouldn't worry about your role TOO much. bobo definitely echoes some great advice. If there was one thing I would do differently my freshmen/sophomore year it would be to start preparing earlier, which it looks like you're doing. I personally don't know too many kids going into b-school right after they graduate (I'm a senior, 5yr program), but an option you should also consider is applying for summer analyst roles instead of completing a 3rd co-op. I know a few kids who have taken that route and ended up in IB. Definitely network and go into work with a good attitude. It's hard with some BO roles, but it shows and managers respect that. Feel free to PM.
