My Life Outlook

Hi Everyone,

This is actually my first post on here so this will be interesting but allow me to introduce myself. I am currently a senior (3 semesters left) at Purdue as an Economics major. I was a horrible student first 2 years (previously Biology major) and pretty much failed half of my classes. I had absolutely no interest in doing biology (or any other science major for that matter) and decided to switch over to what I was really interested in, Economics. Beginning of 3rd year, I switched over to my Liberal Arts Economics because at the time, my grades were not good enough to get into Krannert as a transfer major. I did Liberal Arts Economics for a year and was able to finally switch over to Krannert starting this semester. I truly wish I could have found this site way back when I was in high school.

Anyways fast forward now, I have been doing a lot of reading on this forum and it seems like if I want to be an analyst, I pretty much have 0 shot right now at my stage. My GPA is horrible (I might barely break 3.0 by the end of my time here), Krannert isn't a strong school or have the networking power, and being in the midwest area, there are just too many good b schools around to try and work in Chicago or even in Indy.

GPA wise, there's a chance I can bring it up to 3.5+ but that's only possible if I stay another semester behind and retake all my science classes (organic chem, etc...) during my last semester. I have about 3-4 F's from my biology curriculum and that's bringing my grade down way below it could be. And I would have to bust my ass from now and on. Meaning, 4.0 every semester.

And then there's the strength of school problem. I didn't realize Krannert was THAT horrible in b school ranking. Do I have any shot at landing a analyst job in Chicago? Even if I'm able to pull the grade up to a 3.0 or maybe 3.5?

I am currently taking 17 credits right now and working about 20+ hours a week supporting myself. I'm trying really hard to turn my life around and I'm worried it might be too late.

I mean if let's say I get 3.0 overall GPA by end of my time (due to 3-4 non-major F's).. and my major GPA end up being 3.6-7... Will that help at all? I would love to be working in FO but what are some of the BO options? I'm trying to research what are good options right now but I felt like this was the best source to come for help.

I also didn't realize the geographical location was that important when deciding which school to attend. I wish I had research heck a lot more when I was in high school. I would love to work in Chicago.

I was very excited to start school this year because I finally figured out what exactly I would like to do in the future but after reading through the forums, I was so emotionally depressed that I thought I am too late to turn things around.

I know most of the WSO members are extremely intelligent and successful in the finance field and if I can get any help from you guys, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

Hey man. Despite your performance in school, you have a level of sincerity and passion that I respect. Regardless of the circumstances, I believe that if you work hard enough and don't give up, despite what life may throw at you, you will succeed, God willing. I wasn't the best student in high school. I wasn't a failure, although I did not live up to my potential in and outside of the classroom. After some issues my first semester in college, and returning to school a year after graduating high school, I attended community college and graduated this May with my associates in International Business. I graduated valedictorian. I'm looking to study economics as well when I attend a four-year university. I would consider double-majoring if you're able to like accounting, finance, or business administration along with economics to give you a bit of an edge since economics is a broad topic. Apply to any internships that may arise. There's no substitute for experience. Apply to any and all opportunities you find. Try talking to the head of your department or career counselor at Purdue. I'm sure they can steer you in the right direction or at least give some advice.
You and I are in a similar position. I'm trying to figure out what I want to do after graduating too. It's good that you've joined this forum. It will be of some use to you. Good luck in whatever it is you do. Continue to work hard.

Thanks omar for the input. I'm not sure if double majoring will be possible if I want to graduate within 1 semester of the normal 4 year curriculum since I was way behind. I was and still playing catch up just to be able to graduate with Economics alone. I will definitely be actively looking for help from Krannert and even Purdue's own career development office and we do have krannert's own round tables coming in soon so I will try to network as much as I can but yeah I was asking here because there's more experienced professionals in this field. Thanks for the input and good luck on your goals too!

I would also appreciate if more people can chime in realistic goals I should set up for me that will pan out within next 1 1/2 years.
