I know these threads are very common and quite boring, but could anyone tell me of when an offer was withdrawn? How much are you allowed to exaggerate as long as you don't really lie?

In as much as you're be able to defend your position without being blatantly uncovered
You can't lie about your grades, degree, or school (they ask you for an official transcript and you sign a release allowing them to directly contact the school if necessary)
Also can't lie about past work experience, and positions held (they will conduct a background check on you with your social security number which will allow them to see which companies filed taxes for you - they also ask you to provide phone numbers which a third-party professional background screening company will call to verify info)
Don't forget about criminal records, too. It varies by state, but you may have to also list any arrests even if no charges were brought against you. I'm not familiar with the ins and outs of this, so don't take this as gospel, but maybe someone else will chime in on here.
I represented a kid who lied on his resume, the worst is that you will get blackballed among the other peer firms you are interviewing for. Its never good to lie and usually it doesn't even help. Just tell the truth since you are blackballing yourself for something small (usually not an advantage) so its not worth it.
What if you were an unpaid intern/the company didn't file taxes? Would they then just call to make sure?
You have to put down references most of the time, or if its unpaid they still have records of employment.
There was a thread here a couple of months ago about a guy who exaggerated his UG gpa by a full point. I think he went from 3.0 to 4.0 (yeah, what a moron right?). Anyway, he got the offer, and wasn't discovered until about 8 months into the job, if memory serves, and after he was discovered, he was fired.
Um how did they only discover that 8 months into the job? Background check company taking its sweet time.

People have tried this and failed. A kid from my UG tried to lie his way into BCG.
He got pretty far, but the background checks utilizing corporate Tax reports are what got him. I mean this guy had professionals at firms(his friends) lie for him and say he worked at various F500s.
You also can not lie about your degree, criminal record, or honors on your degree. Just stick to the script.
The only things you can get away with are ECs and awards. A guy in my analyst class said 3 different people claimed to be the top officer of their student run fund lol. HR is not going to waste their time with your ECs........................... That stuff is not easily verifiable.

Hey guys first time poster long time reader. I networked my way into an interview at an energy trading company for a credit risk analyst position. Killed the 4 1/2 hour interview. GPA was not listed on resume, no one ever asked. When I applied online initially it asked 'do you have above a 3.3 gpa' and I put no.
Anyway, a few days ago I got a call from one of my interviewers that I should see a formal offer in a short amount of time. I'm curious, as GPA has not come up, if they'll get my transcripts and rescind. I have like a 2.95 cumulative as an econ major.

I doubt the firm will rescind your offer, since you didn't lie about anything. If you pass the interview and the interviewer like you, most likely nothing will happen to you.
As long as you haven't lied about it to them you should be fine. In my experience GPA is just used for initial screening.
Yeah second above. You didn't lie, and they still gave you the interview after you said no to the gpa question. So they already know it's under 3.3. No worries.

I wanted to throw this out here and see what WSO thought of this situation.
I currently have an offer for a SA with a BB in operations. My concern is that while doing the background check the BB will request a full transcript and they'll see a year of college that was a absolute disaster for me. I took some time off after that year to figure out what the hell I was doing and what I wanted to do, got some decent work experience and generally figured my shit out.
However, my cumulative GPA is total garbage from that year though my major GPA is a 3.4(barely decent). My major GPA what I listed on my resume and application and specified it as such. My GPA was never discussed in any interview with anybody on super day. For some reason they never brought it up at all.
If they request a full transcript with the background check, and see this year that was shit, will they rescind their offer? Blacklist me? Should I email the VPs and MD I interviewed with and make them aware of what the background check will turn up? On one hand they see me as competent and qualified since I passed all the interviews and got the offer, but I can see how they would also think that I'm a complete moron and potentially a liar.
Just curious what everyone thinks on here and any advice as to how to handle the situation. Thanks.
If you were truthful about your GPA on your resume, that is all that matters.
It's just ops. Nobody will care, guaranteed.

As long as you didn't lie, that shouldn't matter. Besides, if that is a result of you exploring your options and trying to figure out what you wanted to do, it's perfectly understandable.

Hi All,
I received a (CS/MS/JPM-type) SA offer last semester with a 3.2 GPA and accepted. I was called to the interview process by a recruiter who knew me well and despite the GPA, I did well in the super day and landed the offer. Everything thus far has been stellar.
During this last semester I was traveling every other week for interviews/business, working 40 hrs/week at another BB, and running student orgs on campus - by this I mean to say I was not slacking off/partying. As a result my GPA was affected by the end of the semester and is now just below a 3.0. My professors have granted me permission to retake their courses and replace the grade/credit, which I plan on doing; the courses with sub-par performance were non-business-related. I'm about to send in transcripts to my BB for the background check.
My question is to whether or not I should reach out to my recruiter ahead of time and explain the situation to clear the air and explain myself. I have been reading every posting on WSO regarding this for SA's and cannot come to a clear conclusion - I am honestly sweating bullets with the possibility of my offer being rescinded. I want to be upfront but should I wait for them to reach out to me?

wait...your GPA went from ~3.2 to 3.0 in one semester? So I assume you didn't pass the classes/get credit, so will you be graduating at all? If not, then not it'll definitely be rescinded.
The classes were not related to my degree, will not affect graduation.
The concern is whether I should bring it up with them ahead of time.
edit- didn't read your post thoroughly. If you have a good relationship with the recruiter I would be honest about it ahead of time but stress that your graduation date hasn't been affected.
I'd shoot em an email. Doubt they'll care since they took you on when you had a 3.2 anyway.

I have an offer from a BB for this summer. I applied on-campus at my Ivy despite having a GPA about 0.3 below what the firm says was its "minimum" (I'm an engineer). My cumulative GPA was printed very clearly on my resume, and it was acknowledged during my interview.
They're going to request my transcript. There's been absolutely no lying, deception, rounding, or anything, but I still have a couple low grades (Ds, Cs) on my transcript in courses unrelated to my position. Am I in any danger of having my offer rescinded either because of a few low grades on the transcript, or because my GPA is below their "application minimum"?
justanothermonkey: if your GPA was formally acknowledged, as you claim, both verbally and in print, you should be fine. i doubt they can claim ignorance and take the offer off the table. even if this was indeed an oversight on their part, you've obviously impressed them enough to move you through the rounds. you should be fine. that being said, i suppose they can do anything they want as long as neither party signed anything binding. but it seems unlikely.
