Phone call, Meeting or Both?

I contacted an alumni requesting either a phone call or a meeting when I am in town for break. He said he is happy to do speak with me on the phone and/or meet with me when I'm in town.

I responded asking to talk next Thursday and meet the week of the 17th. Was this the right move? I feel like if I speak with him on the phone and then meet with him I will run out of questions and things to ask.

 

You won't run out once you get started, keep the phone call brief just explaining your background + goals. Then in person delve more into what he has done and how you could achieve success in the field, what you need to do, how he can help etc.

So pitch my story and then use the meeting to build rapport by showing interest in what he does? How do I keep the call short? Should I say something like (After the hello how are you's) " I don't want to take up too much of your time with this call since we are meeting in a couple of weeks but I was hoping "???"
