Would learning programming be useful for Investment Banking?
Hi all,
As an inspiring Quant, computer science/programming is a domain that I definitely have to master (Have been trying to). However, I recently had a friend who is an aspiring Investment banker who asked me if programming could find its way to Investment banking. I understand that things like creation of pitch books, creating pitches etc would be extremely hard to replace with computers but what about things like valuations? I've heard of a company called Equidam that does automated valuations...
With all this mind. Should an Investment Banker learn programming?
It's not at all necessary.
What about learning how to use programs like Tableu? Would that value add to an Investment Banker?
Excel/VBA/SQL, no real need for anything.
Become a beast at those, Python if you have to.
Programming in IB? (Originally Posted: 07/21/2016)
Rising freshman at target school. Hey everyone, I'm really interested in IB and I'm trying to figure out the skillset I need to bolster my resume and skills for such an industry. I'm wondering what are the thoughts on a Programming language for IB? It seems like aside from maybe SQL and VBA, there isn't really any use for one in IB, but I could be entirely wrong. I know the basics of SQL, but that's about it. I'm not looking to go into tech or HFT, but to try and land an analyst role. I've read VBA is good, but I feel like my Excel skills aren't that good (I know the basics of Excel, but nothing super advanced) to dive into VBA.
Additionally, what can I do to bolster my Excel skills? I'm having trouble finding stuff to help me. I know how to set up spreadsheets and add/multiply/subtract columns (ie. very basic stuff lol). Thank you for any help!
