Recruiting - ADVICE NEEDED

I just graduated from an accredited university with a Bachelor's in Accounting. I moved to a big city 700 miles away immediately after graduation (2 weeks ago) and have been looking for an entry-level Accounting job since. I have been looking for Accounts Payable and Data Entry positions - really basic shit. I've been trying to network as much as I can and apply to everywhere I can (utilizing all of my resources) but it's been almost three weeks and I haven't even gotten an interview. It's not looking good.

I've even been working with recruiting agencies, namely Robert Half International. There have been a few roles that have popped up through them but nothing yet has materialized into even an interview. Which brings me to the question I have for all of you. Robert Half Finance and Accounting branch invited me to interview for an entry-level recruiting position working internally for them. I interviewed and I'm not sure if they will offer the position, but I'm scared that it is a path that I would not want to go down. The base is pretty solid. It is between $40,000 and $45,000 per year, which is as much if not more than I would be making with any bullshit entry-level Accounting position, while also making commission.

My concern is, I'm already 25. I don't want to go down the recruitment/sales path and forgo any Accounting experience. But at the same time I am desperate for income. It's really looking like I won't get an Accounting job any time within the next month. I would have to work extremely hard, and this recruiting position is right here in front of my face with decent money.

What do you guys think I should do? Someone please help me on this. Anyone who knows about the Accounting and recruiting fields. Anyone.

 

I don't have much to offer you as far as advice goes. I just know you should have started trying to secure interviews/network long before you graduated from your accredited university. Keep at it. Persistence will reward you.

That's what I was doing. I started in January. I was emailing everyone I possibly could. Applying to everywhere I could. Was in constant contact with Robert Half all semester. People wouldn't answer my emails. No one would give me an interview. It's really hard to network when you are 700 miles away. I was even making trips there periodically. I spent my entire spring break trying to meet with the few alumni from my school that live here. They never gave me any time. I tried to be as proactive as I could without compromising my difficult school schedule. I loaded up on classes so I could get out of there after this past semester. That's why I moved here as soon as I could after graduation, because it's just too hard to get anything done from that far away. Thank you for offering your thoughts.

Talk to some alumni from your school. Use LinkedIn or you school alumni database.

I appreciate your thoughts and response, but I have already been doing just that. My question is should I take the recruiter position because I will probably have to make that decision tomorrow

3 weeks is nothing and June/July is a pretty slow period... keep digging, applying, emailing and connecting through LinkedIn. Try to do volunteering stuff, try to get a temp job... have you tried staffing agencies? some of them are decent and will be able to hook you up with accounting/ data entry jobs.

Indeed. Check. Trying to find a temp job. Check. Staffing agencies. Check. That's who is offering me the recruiter position. A staffing agency. I have to decide whether I want the job tomorrow. That is my question. Do I take the decent-paying recruiter job or do I hold out for Accounting experience.

What would you be doing at Robert Half? Recruiting people? If so, take it. You will likely make more connections than you could possibly imagine, and it is better than nothing.

If you would be doing something more relevant, then why not?
