Recruiting after Sophomore BB Internship
I'll be interning at a BB in IB as a sophomore and obviously, I know my first focus should be on getting the return offer and finding if this is the firm/industry I really want to be in. And just the chilling the eff out until this summer.
But I was wondering about recruiting after my internship if I decide to go with another firm/don't get a return offer. I know there is an accelerated FT process after junior year and that GS has an accelerated process beginning in Oct. intended for study aborad. But is there a super accelerated process for junior BB internships to get offers wrapped up by September? That'd be sweet to pretty much do whatever the hell I wanted junior year.
Advice from anyone who has done a BB IB sophomore internship and can speak to doing recruiting after would be greatly appreciated!
I don't think there is a "super" accelerated recruiting process for juniors (assuming you mean for junior-year summer analyst positions). The most accelerated thing you could have would be if your summer employer gives you a return offer (in which case you could theoretically chill).
If you want to switch firms, or leverage a return offer to get something else, the fastest track would be the accelerated process designed for study abroad students. But, I believe you actually have to be studying abroad in the Spring to qualify for this (you can't just request to go through the process early for the sake of convenience/preference).
For what it's worth, I also did a BB internship sophomore year, decided I did want to switch firms, and then went through the normal recruiting process in junior year. Maybe there was some faster process that I overlooked, but I don't believe so...
If they like you, you won't be interviewing for junior SA.
@seedy, I get that I should be looking for a return offer, but my question is if I wanted to leverage that into other options. I would like to be able to make a decision relatively soon after summer and have as many options as possible also when making a decision rather than delaying it.
^ can't help you out too much. i can only give you an example of a guy who did MS freshman-program internship, was offered to return back for sophomore program and interned again, then wasn't asked to come back for junior SA (exception–apparently most of the other sophomores were asked to return) and will now be working at CS this summer.
just work hard during the summer and you should be good to go.
If you do get the return offer, contact the SA recruiters at other banks immediately. You can press them to see if they'll accelerate your process, but no guarantees.
Sort of off topic but I know a guy who did BB after sophomore year, liked the firm but not NYC. This summer he's with the same firm out on the West Coast.
You could always see if that's an option (assuming you do get the offer).
After I completed my Soph BB SA stint, I didn't get a return offer, and just went through regular channels in my Junior year to get another BB SA gig. This was in 2008-2009 though, so it could have changed.
If you get get a return offer, most banks will accelerate your interviews. I know someone who got an SA position before Junior year started.
Bump. Just wanted to see if anyone else had any perspective, especially coming from a sophomore BB internship.
