Rising Sophomore IB Resume - tear it apart
Hey Guys,
I just spent all day yesterday re-writing my resume preparing for the upcoming recruitment season. The items in red are things that I need to verify before I can put the exact numbers in so disregard that.
Here is the link: http://www.razume.com/documents/26021
Right now here are the questions I have regarding the resume:
-
I founded a low income squash club at UVA that will be starting this up coming semester. Where can I incorporate that into my resume? It shows both leadership and volunteer work.
-
I worked both private equity internships for 2 years a piece. How can I list the start / finish dates to show that I worked 2 summers.
-
At both my internships I really haven't been assigned a "position". Is leaving it at "summer intern" enough or should I change that to "summer analyst" or something along those lines.
-
I've worked at a hardware store for 7 years. I am still currently working there and would like to know whether I should list this on my resume or not. Seven years seems like a long time and could show commitment maybe?
-
Should I list the related classes in terms of what I've already take, or what I will have taken by the time the internship arrives?
Thanks for all the help - if you want me to read your resume just send it my way
Manhattan isn't a city. Change it to "New York, NY". More comments in a second...
Alright thanks FSC
Overall, it looks like a really solid resume for a rising sophomore.
Get rid of the weak verbs, specifically "led to," "assisted in," "verified," "attended." A good exercise I tried was imaging, "would this employer hire someone who 'attended meetings' or 'assisted in the creation of xyz by verifying.'" Think about the skills you will need in your ideal job out of college (think valuation, modeling, researching, handling and balancing multiple workstreams or clients simultaneously, etc.). Use action verbs that show you can do that job.
I'm actually a rising freshman right now. I'm trying to land a BB gig my sophomore summer. Thanks for the comments Enjayes, you're definitely right about the weak verbs.
I changed the title.
Sorry for the misunderstanding.
You worked both internships for 2 years? As in, you have 4 years of internship experience under your belt?
Either way, keep it to "Intern," and you can state your group if you were in one or just "Private Equity Intern" if you didn't or were more generalized.
As for the hardware store experience and the squash club: you can put both in your "additional info" section. Make sure you effectively articulate both in a short sentence for each and it'll do the job well. You could expand them into their own section, but I'm 100% confident that your experience stands out far beyond what your co-curricular involvement might. Just make sure to include it to prove your leadership ability.
List classes you've taken; the purpose of putting them on a resume is to show the interviewer what you already know (and they will sometimes base their questions on materials related to those topics).
Overall, assuming your internship experience is actually 4 years as you made it sound, you'll demolish FT recruiting upon graduation.
EDIT: Don't use "Summer Analyst" in your internships; that's a specific title used when the trainee is part of an analyst program that may yield a return offer.
FSC thanks for the fantastic advice. I do have 4 years currently under my belt. However, the first two years were essentially scanning and had little exposure to the financial aspect of PE. However, for this year and the year past, I have been doing real work.
I'm hoping next year to land an IB intership so when my junior year summer comes around, I'll have a fighting chance at BX, Carlyle etc.

I guess I misspoke. I'm a rising sophomore? I completed 1 year thus far at UVA. I don't know if that is a rising sophomore, but thats what I've done.
Yea I thought a "rising" freshman meant I was rising out of freshman year. I've completed my first year of college. That is it.
