Student Clubs & Work

I pretty much finished my UG degree in 3 years, but there is a single class that I have to take next year. As a result, I decided that I'll do a full-year internship at a financial services company next year (10-hour work days, located in the same city as my university, some traveling involved).

Anyway, this year I was "the second most important person" in a number of student clubs, including the student government. If I decide to run, I'll likely become the student government president and a president of 2-3 clubs. This would obviously look great on my CV and help me a lot with FT recruiting, but I would probably be a sh.t president due to work commitments. What should I do?

Gangster Putin, that is exactly what I was thinking, but the problem is not so much that I wouldn't have enough time. The problem is rather that some activities would necessarily overlap timewise as I will not have absolute control over scheduling my activities. So I would have to miss certain things and come up with smart excuses - that is what I'm worried about.

BlueWing Thanks for a very good response. However, while I agree that "one extra probably won't make a huge difference" I think that difference in my case would be significant and as somebody who goes to a borderline semi-target, I don't want to miss any opportunity.

I'd love to hear any additional advice.

I was super involved in extracurriculars and had a similar to dilemma to yours. SG President or Finance for my senior year. I chose finance and I think it worked out. I already had real high up roles in SG like yours and decided the finance experience was more worth it. If you've already done a ton of extracurriculars, the one extra probably won't make a huge difference. I'm a big believer in if you're going to do something do it right so if you don't have the time to do the internship and SG President pick one or the other and do it right.

lol na man it's normal. Keep a close affiliation in case you want to go to business school.

"Look, you're my best friend, so don't take this the wrong way. In twenty years, if you're still livin' here, comin' over to my house to watch the Patriots games, still workin' construction, I'll fuckin' kill you. That's not a threat, that's a fact.
