Getting ready to start FT investment banking in a boutique and we have to take the series 79 exam. I have a few free weeks prior to training and was wondering if I should start studying now, just to get it out of the way.
I am not sure if my firm will provide some sort of study materials for it, but if I start getting ready now, what study guide should I use? Any free ones out there?

If you're not sure if your firm will be providing you materials, why don't you shoot an email to HR prior to looking at buying them yourself?

The 79 is tough, it's a much more difficult than the 7. I'd start studying now and I'd allot about 100 hours to it if you want to pass comfortably. There are no free study guides out there, but the most popular seem to be Knopman and Securities Training Corporation. I used Knopman and passed by a pretty wide margin. I would think the bank should reimburse you for your study materials since it's a requirement for the job to pass, and if they don't then you may want to re-think where you're working.
