Submitting a New Job Application After Accepting an Offer? Too Late to Renege?

Many people have posted about continuing to recruit after signing, but what about actively submitting new applications?

For further context, I'm a senior at a target who accepted a job at a consulting firm (below MBB level) a few months ago. I recently decided that my ultimate goal is to go into PE and without an IBD background, I know this jump is very difficult. For this reason, I think it would be in my best interest to begin my career in PE, rather than trying to lateral after a few years in consulting, though I'm open to suggestions?

I interviewed at a few PE places before accepting my offer, but I decided against these small MM shops. Recently though, a large, reputable MM shop (PE 300) appeared on my school's job page that I would like to apply to (and would accept over my current offer).

My question is: would my firm know if I applied and would my school alert them to this? Additionally, if I told the PE firm I already accepted an offer but am willing to renege, would they consider me? Is it worth it? If anything, is this doubt a sign I should just renege and continue exploring other opportunities?

Would you renege before or after applying?

Seems detrimental to renege before even knowing I have an interview, let alone an offer from the PE firm.

Do people ever email other companies and ask to interview if they've already accepted an offer?

Commenting for notifications.

Also in a similar position: accepted a job offer earlier this year but want to keep recruiting. I've considered reaching out to a few places and explaining that I am interested in working there, but also not willing to risk losing my current offer.

Your reputation is everything. Feel free to burn the offer, but sure as hell don't start only to live in a few weeks. Think about how the HF would view you if you did.

...

My best guess would be no harm in applying. Unless someone at the HF knows someone at the BB and you alert the HF of your signed offer at the BB. But like guy above said, if you get the HF offer don't go work at the BB for 3 weeks then quit. If you get the offer immediately call the BB and break up with them.
