Transition to Banking Advice

Is it possible to get an analyst position 1 years out of school? Graduated undergrad and will now begin working for a top mutual fund for atleast a year. Do you guys ever hear about people coming in after 1 year? Trying to figure out how I will venture into banking either now or after grad school

Yes, it can definitely be done, mainly through networking, applying through OCR (if your school still lets young alumni apply that way), etc. However, I'd probably caution you into making this into a goal for a maximum of 2 years out of undergrad. I personally don't think it's worth attempting to break into banking as an analyst when you're around 3 years out of school and ~25, unless you really don't care about working those hours at that point in your life. That's just my IMO, but more importantly, it may be the banks' opinion as well - some people within banking would rather hire a senior in college over a 24-25 year old that's been out of college for a couple years, mainly because they think the younger guy could handle the hours better.

jdrdeerI'm 25, graduated in may 2011. No job at graduation and no internships, Didn't get a job till 3/2012 in a credit risk/corp banking role and just lateraled to an elite boutique as an IBD analyst...

Wow, that is impressive, do you mind sharing your story? So you had no prior internships and was unemployed until March of 2012. How did you get by, during that long unemployment gap? Did you network into the elite boutique?

I worked full time while going to school in a completely unrelated sales/communications role. I quit my jr year and saved up some money as well as received unemployment. I used that time to travel and start a non-profit (also non finance related) got an email inviting me to interview from the bank who I guess went through a resume book. I literally killed it in my role and had ridiculous responsibility ( basically running a big deal where my bank was the investor before my first year was even complete) I was my md's right hand man I was then asked to co run a desk towards the end of my first year, which I did. I always wanted to get into IBD and got a headhunter to submit me for a few roles I liked the elite boutique the most by far.

jmbjr2012Is that usually the cut off year for an analyst? around 25?

No body is going to ask you your age until the background check comes...that being said it is easy to judge your age by when you graduated. I graduated a year late. I'd say you need a job within a year o graduating and then a lateral move a year or so later and it won't look weird. Even this requires explanation by you. If it is all true and make sense you are ok

Yea I might have said earlier but I graduated in December and will be starting full time tomorrow for a large mutual fund with a good training program. Only problem is I am more working on the client service side for now but wanted to transition into more finance in a year either through same company or to banking. Did it for a good entry into the company. Thinking about taking some night classes to get myself more educated for when the time comes..

I am older but luckily graduated recently so that is good then!

jmbjr, I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you didn't ignore my PM, considering I know exactly what you do, where you work, and how to make the successful transition into banking or at a minimum, put yourself into a position where it's possible.
