University of Alberta target or non?
In Canada would the University of Alberta be considered a target, semi-target, or non-target school?

Target only in Alberta. Seriously...
This. Target only in Alberta. Semi target at best anywhere else, non target on east coast but still recognizable.
Calgary is the Canadian equivalent of Texas. Except when you leave Canada people understand/respect the powerhouse that is Texas and have no idea wtf Calgary is. Speaking from experience, I've worked in Calgary at one of the places you likely know.

Hello:
I've done a thread search for this school, but nothing really came up regarding its MBA program (yes, they have an MBA program...).
The general consenus is that Ivey rules the roost in Canada for banking.
But does UofA's MBA have any street cred? I'm particularily interested in working in Vancouver or Calgary, not Toronto.
The reason I'm interested in UofA is because I'm already doing my law degree here and it would be convenient to do the concurrent degree.
Or should I just finish up the law degree and apply for the MBA at Ivey -- Nayls, are you around??
Thanks,
marsh
PS - quick tip to the aspiring law students: think twice; law school is drudgery!
i pitty you dude... too many a poor souls have ended up in law school when they should have either gone for banking or got some decent pre-MBA work experience
haha thanks for the pity, niles. Yeah, it's not fun, but I may as well make the best of it while I'm here.
I actually tried to get into banking before law school, but I wasn't able to crack the market. I had to settle for ops experience and now I'm in law school...it's been a rough few years, but I try to look at the bright side and stay humble.
Any tips on getting a summer position as a law student?
2008 MBA Ranking has just released, I am really surprised to see UofA to become No.4 Canadian BSchool....and over all in 88 for global ranking. Here is the link: http://media.ft.com/cms/513183c0-ca6d-11dc-a960-000077b07658.pdf
It is quite different compared to Business Week's.
Yeah I saw that too. Although FT is generally thought to be the most credible ranking guide, I find 2008's ranking to be a little fishy.
Indian School of Business out of nowhere to #20 all of a sudden? A bunch of UK schools progressing up in the rankings, whereas US schools barely increased -- maybe this is biased, who knows.
Emory ranked higher than Duke and Berkeley is kind of strange too, no offence to Gouizueta (sp?) grads.
Re: the Alberta MBA -- I recently went to an info session and was not very impressed. I think I'll just finish up the law degree and see what happens.
Apologies for the delay. Busy work/life this year.
I can't think of anyone in investment banking that is from UofA. That is in Alberta and elsewhere. Having said that, there are literally dozens of Ivey grads in Calgary, and the heads of 2/3 of the investment banks in town are Ivey grads. Many of the rest are HBS grads. I would say Calgary investment banking is more dominated by Ivey grads than Toronto investment banking, and that is saying something.
I can't talk to the foolish rankings of the FT, but I would be surprised if Ivey even participates (they no longer participate in a number of rankings as the school disagrees with many of the arbitrary ranking criteria).
Soo, is UofA a good school for Canada IB in Toronto and Calgary ??
