UMich Econ or USC Marshall
Hi guys! I was accepted into Marshall at USC and Econ at UMich and I'm having a difficult time choosing between the two. I'm originally from Southern California so I would prefer to go out of state for the experience because I'm a junior level transfer and only have two years left but everyone thinks I'm crazy to pass up the opportunity to be at b-school at USC while I'm in LSA at UMich. I 100% plan on going to grad school and pursing a MBA so what I'm wondering is if it really makes a difference if I go to UMich for Econ for undergrad or would it be better for me to do Bus Admin at Marshall and graduate from there and then attend grad school for a MBA? I'm also considering applying to Ross after my first year in LSA even though I would graduate later. Please help! Thanks!
It is generally a bad idea to go directly to business school following undergrad for a number of reasons. Not sure if you meant right after but it seemed kind of implied.
I imagine Econ majors are at a pretty significant disadvantage relative to Ross for job placement. Marshall places really well on the west coast

Haha, we have the same situation!!!!!!!!!! I am still deciding!!!

Honestly, we considering same thing!!! I want to go to Umich but I am afraid of not finding a job.
There's generally never a 'cookie cutter' answer or solution to most problems, so the best I can do is give you my perspective. Here are a few questions that should get you thinking, and above all you need to be realistic (bordering pessimistic) with your answers and assumptions:
1) Why is your current university insufficient? Specifically, you need to have a good reason why you can't meet your current goals there.
2) Where do you want to work after graduation? Your network is very important, and while getting an 'outside perspective' sounds great in theory; eventually you are going to need to leverage your University for recruiting, and you are going to want them where you need them.
3) What is your financial situation? You talk about transferring to a private school that isn't the greatest with student aid and an out-of-state school where you might attend an extra year in order to transfer internally. You're potentially talking about an additional 65k for that extra year (not counting the other two years)... What kind of debt load are you looking at with any of these moves? Would it be more beneficial to save that money and use it toward your MBA down the road?
You need to take charge and be the CEO if your life, so treat this like a business decision. Put together your plan/options and decide which path you would actually invest in and then make the most out of that decision.

I'm a public university student (Top 50 national usnews), and have been accepted to U Mich Econ for junior. I'm currently waiting for USC Marshall.
I am studying accounting and finance and want to pursue a career in consulting, corporate finance, IB, or Accounting Big 4 audit (I am still researching the best fit for me). Besides accounting big 4, do they prefer people with strong accounting emphasis? As an international student, I found it is very difficult to get a job by graduating from my university, so that's why I decided to transfer.
I don't mind either going to east coast or west coast, but concerned if UMich Econ would give me great chances of job placements for international student. Also, considering UMich Ross is so good, I feel like econ students wouldn't get many opportunities. I'm not planning to apply for Ross because that means I have to spend extra four years at college. For this reason, I'm leaning towards USC Marshall if I get an offer from them, but I want to hear people's opinions.

go to marshall, you'll get better offers than you would as a UMich econ student no question. I have a lot of friends who went to michigan and usc, so I know what I'm talking about.

If you are international its gonna be hard to break into IB/MBB regardless of the school you are going to so you gotta have some backup plans. Marshall would be best for you given you are in the business school there.

Choose UMICH. Econ majors at Umich are not really at much of a disadvantage to the Ross kids. All the econ majors at Umich I know (including my twin brother who now works in IB) got more interviews than they could handle in IB, consulting, AM, etc. On campus recruiting for Ross is not difficult to access as an econ major and almost all of the same companies hold info meetings and post jobs on the general umich board usually requesting finance/econ/related etc.
USC Marshall VS Umich Econ (Originally Posted: 07/06/2015)
Hello guys:
I got acceptance to USC Marshall and Umich Econ and Fordham Business School. I am trying to decide to which school I should go. Here is my situation.
I am an international student from China. I am a rising junior. I heard many people saying it is impossible for international student to find IB jobs, so we should prepare to go back to China or Hon Kong to look for Ib jobs. Is that true? If I go back to China, which school is better in Hong Kong IB firms?
This is my second time transfer (I know this is very bad). First time I was in Marquette University as a finance student, and second time I was in UIUC as an econ student. I found out that Econ student in UIUC does not have lots of resources. This made me transfer the second time.
I am wondering about Umich Econ. Will Umich econ students have lots of resources? I know Econ has less opps than Ross students, but maybe they can still have a big chance to get into IB firms?
I checked my USC Transfer Credits Reports, and it seems like I need to spend two and half year, even three years to graduate. However, in Umich, it only take me two years to graduate as an econ student.
I read lots of people' profile on Linkedin in IB firms. I found out that many people took non-business major and took MBA and then go to companies like GS. Should I do Umich Econ which can offer me strong network in IB? And then do an MBA?
Although I don't like Econ major, but I think I can handle it very well. I have 3.8GPA right now, and I will keep up. Please give me some advise about choosing schools and majors. If you can offer some plans to break into IB, I would really appreciate. I am not greedy. I just want to pay back to my parents after graduate.
Thank you very much!!!
UMich 110% not even a contest. They are solid in IB.
Even though I am an economics major? I am a rising junior. I forgot to mention that these offers are transfer offers. I used to study in UIUC as an econ student, and I found out that they econ major does not have lots of opportunities.
So even as an econ graduate?
You can still get into Ross from Umich LSA
I forgot to mention that these offers are transfer offers. And I am an rising junior, so there won't be a chance to get into Ross.
I personally feel that UM may be a safer bet as a school. you could try Ross and I think you get a 50% chance from LSA. But if you're in LSA you don't get much Ross-exclusive recruiting. Ross or not, U-M has a strong pull towards New York / Chicago.
USC has its advantages too. You could transfer to the nearby berkeley/stanford/UCLA with USC, Marshall itself is a strong b-school too, The bigger advantage is that LA itself is a good city to find internships, have frequent speakers and network with alums or professionals around the area, and if you're international, you better prepare very very early to have internships prior to jobs
I am an transfer student and I am rising junior. So after getting into Umich, Ross is not an option. So right now, I am comparing Marshall and Umich Econ. I know Umich is a great school and have strong alumni around Chicago and NY, but I am not sure about how the econ major help me get into IB.
Question about the opportunities which I will get from umich and usc. I recently did lots of research, including going through each alumni profile from both school who working in IBs. I found that Umich has more people in IBs than USC does. And, those most of Umich people who working in IBs have econ degrees or poly science degree.
Does this mean more IB opportunities in Umich LSA than USC marshall? I need to make decision on next Monday. Hope can get information as much as I can get before that.
Many thanks to WSO community.
both will work out fine. for jobs USC will help with you being locals.
