What do I do? Need real advice.

Hello everyone,

I am a final year aerospace engineering student in the UK.

I know most, if not all, of you here are very busy. But if you could just have a look at this message and give me some advice, I would be very appreciative of it.

For anyone who has a stellar memory, you would remember that I was sincerely looking for an internship opportunity in IB and unfortunately had no luck. This stress/disappointment dragged me far far away from my plan (which was to do my GMAT, apply to good MSc programs and apply to jobs next year) and as a result, I am now without an internship offer or a university offer (since I didn't apply to any).

My course has gotten very serious (due to research projects) and as such I am struggling to find time to look for any opportunities or apply to universities. I do, however, have two offers: one for Audit from a Big 4 (for a deferred entry), and another for an engineering position with a very very respectable car manufacturer.

I am not sure or have a slight idea about what I should do next. I can't live with this uncertainty, and it's really driving me mad. Does anyone have any thoughts about this?

Thank you.

I was in a similar situation as you when I graduated because the entrepreneurial path that I had laid out for myself unfortunately didnt pan out so I was forced to look for a real job. The uncertainty of what to do next with your life can be incredibly overwhelming and debilitating at times as we spend most of our youth being told what to do and at least have a sense of what the next logical step will be. This is often not the case when you graduate.

What to do next is obviously a highly personal decision and without knowing you or your future goals there is not much advice that any of us can give you. At least you have two job offers which is two more than plenty of kids have out there these days.

Thanks for your reply junkbondswap :)

Yes, I just received these offers recently so I was pretty much without hope just before that, so things do turn up sometimes. My future career aspiration is to work in a bank, but I am not sure about the "route" to take.

I could either go do MSc at a semi-target school and then reapply to full time jobs (without any internship experience) OR take one of these offers (not sure which) and apply to banks later on with this experience to boot.

If I take the Audit route, I would be starting next year on a 3 year graduate programme (so total of 4 years) whereas the engineering role (which also pays better) starts this year and lasts for two years. Does taking one of this show as lack of motivation when I apply to banks in the future?

Thanks.

Best Response

If you really want to do banking you can get there through Big 4 Audit but it will take years, numerous disapointments and dealing with some awful work and very poor pay in the mean time.

If you really want banking you will go throught this only to be given the privalege of working 90 hours a weel for analyst pay at a boutique.

You need to really consider if this is something you want to devote your life too or wheter you're just thinking "Banking...sweet....balla money..bottle and models etc."

If you still want it the path is:

Big 4 audit Try hard to transfer to advisory in your Big 4 firm This will likely not happen so wait until you qualify then move to advisory (TS/Restructuring/M&A/Valuations) Try to make the jump to a boutique

All the while you should be networking hard, staying up to date on commercial knowledge and working hard to develop your skillset any way you can (e.g. excel courses, modelling courses, potentially CFA/other qualifications).

Tough route. Have to ask yourself honestly if you're better with the engineering?

It kind of depends on which area of banking you want to work in...if you'd be happy with a MO or Finance job then take the big 4 offer, work there for a couple years and then you can rather easily join a bank. On the other hand, if you are more interested in FO type positions I would think your best bet is to take the engineering job for a couple years and then apply to a top Master in Finance or Financial engineering program which would give you the opportunity to start the whole BB grad scheme recruiting thing again.
