What looks worse...asking for work and screwing it up slightly or just not even asking for work?

I'm wondering, what looks worse.... Asking for work and screwing it up slightly when you have just started or not even asking for work. I've started my internship just last week and obviously am still learning the ropes about the organization of our files, etc... and today got a bit of a lecture about taking more time to look over stuff and ask questions if I need help.

I'm thinking showing initiative and obviously improving your work over time would be the best way to go about doing tasks.

Ask for work and ask for help if you're not sure. Would you rather sit around and do nothing or just leave? It's really up to you I guess, but I would rather want my guy to be active.

Banking > VC > Tech PE; PM me if you would like any advice I'm happy to help
