What to accomplish as a first year MBA student?

Hi All,

I couldn't seem to find a prior thread that quite addressed my issue. For individuals that have completed an MBA program, what would you recommend I accomplish by the end of my first year? Did you set a goal for networking and/or reaching out to Alumni, connecting with the career center, acing your courses, hitting the bars with friends, etc.?

I'd love to hear your input and advice on how I should approach my first year. Thanks in advance!

There are two things you must do, and little else in my opinion:

The first is get a summer internship that puts you further down the path towards your career goals. How you do this will likely involve alumni networking, utilizing career services, attending conferences/events, or just chatting up your classmates, but will vary a lot depending on career path and school.

The second is to build meaningful relationships with your classmates. People vary over how much they emphasize quality vs. quantity, but I think a combination is probably the best way to go. You want a few people who would do anything for you, and a lot of people who think positively of you and would be willing to help you out.

Agreed. The main thing to accomplish 1st year is to get the right internship. Everything else is bonus, and can honestly be deferred to second year. After all, once you convert your internship into a job (or parlay it into a FT offer in the fall), you'll have all the time in the world to hit the bars, get to know alumni, learn something, etc.

Then again, I approached my MBA in a pretty calculating manner. You may value all that touchy feely stuff, and that whole learning thing.

Thank you both for the input - SB'd! I'd love to hear any additional input as well. I don't plan on being this guy, but do you know anyone who did not snag a summer internship? If so, what did they do? Sounds like that has to be my number one priority. Thanks, guys.

Everyone will find something, companies are always looking for people last minute. It's just a question of people settling for things that they're less than thrilled about.

One issue is that with some industries, hiring tends to happen on a "just in time" basis, so it can be tough to find something before April (although it's important to network before then so you learn about what's out there and get on people's radar). Then you have to figure out if you should take an offer or wait for something better on a pretty quick basis.

I do, and FT recruiting did not go well for them. Same for the people who had to find some random just in time internship; only happened to a few people a year at my program, but it completely screws you for FT recruiting.

This is at an M7? What do you think the issue was?

People are dumb sometimes. Bad decisions with bid points (when applicable), arrogance (wanting consulting, only applying to MB (not even Bain!), not "bothering" to network with a bunch of the F500 companies because you don't want to waste time and are sure you can get those "safety" internships, etc etc. You'd be surprised.

I had some former Deloitte buddies in my program, and one of them offered to help out one our classmates by talking to him about the firm, introducing him to people, etc. Response: "That's ok, I'm really only interested in McKinsey". Yeahhhhh............changes his tune after not even getting an interview. Deloitte friend goes out of his way to make sure this guy has no shot.

And some people (often international) just CAN'T TALK OR COMMUNICATE WITH OTHER HUMAN BEINGS.
