What to expect in this industry
Hi guys
I just finished my college and accepted an offer from HK based L/S hedge fund as a research analyst.
As far as I know getting into HF industry without any prior experience is rare.
My question is, would I be able to successfully grow in this firm? What kind of life style will I face as I commence my career? When ppl refer to "models" what does that mean?
Congrats on the offer! I'm a recent L/S HF grad in Australia but I follows predominately the HK market. Been working for around 1 year now.
Good luck! Great gig to get out of uni.
Nasum, were you also recruited directly from undergrad? I always assumed this was an American phenomenon. Do many of these opportunities exist in Aus?
I was about to go through the recruitment process for IB, but decided to try my luck and cold email around. This firm was receptive and after the interview process, I was doing a 1 month full time internship with them over my winter break (July). Post that, they asked me to study at university part-time and work 4 days a week - this arrangement lasted for 1 year. Now i have just graduated from uni - I'm full timing here.
I would say that opportunities like this are extremely rare and lucky, especially given the size of HFs in Aus. But cold emailing around never hurt.
Thank you for the comment. I really found your comment useful. Do you think starting at a hedge fund would put me on a better ground than those ppl starting in IBs? Also, excuse me if I am rude to ask but how are your benefits? (Base and bonus) and how often do you go on a business trip?
Do you think starting at a hedge fund would put me on a better ground than those ppl starting in IBs? I've been thinking about this for a long time and it really depends. IMO - if after 2 years, I'm able to understand the markets and convincingly pitch stocks / ideas, I hope I would be I would be better off than an IB applying for a large shop L/S HF. Probably best to ask someone more senior about this though. (I enjoy my work / hours a lot better than IB though)
Also, excuse me if I am rude to ask but how are your benefits? (Base and bonus) Still be to negotiated. When I was still at university I was on an 'intern' contract. Will be sitting down with them soon. Perhaps PM this topic? Keen to hear about yours too.
and how often do you go on a business trip? I haven't been yet - for the senior analyst he goes international around 4 times a year across Asia.
Yes/no depending on the fund. The larger/more prestigious the HF, the better your ground. The first HF I worked at, although very small in terms of AUM, was managed by a very well known PM in the value investing world and is an adjunct professor at Columbia. When I was trying to find a full time job (first job was part-time), 90% of the people calling me back for interviews were Columbia MBA grads. If you work at some fund no one has heard of, chances are Goldman Sachs will look better on the resume.
If your just coming from undergraduate, not that good.
I'm guessing it varies from fund to fund. The larger the fund or more positions the fund hold, the more analysts will go on business trips as opposed to the PM. The firm I currently work at holds very concentrated positions (10-15), so traveling to shareholder conferences/events/etc. is done by the PMs.
