Who to address and to what industry group?
This is about the cover letter.
1. People always say that it's best if the cover letter is addressed to a Mr. Smith rather than Dear Sir/Madam. If I am applying through the online database, who should it be addressed to?
2. Is it appropriate to mention the firm's strengths in the cover letter as a reason why I want to work there? It seems tacky to say in a generic cover letter, I want to work at GS because of the TMT group or at Morgan Stanley because of the M&A group.
thanks

I'd address the cover letter
I'd address the cover letter to your school's recruting contact..you'll be able to find the info on the career database
The school's recruiting
1. The school's recruiting contact doesn't work in HR. Since I'm doing the online app, writing down the name of 1 random VP won't really do anything will it?
2. Some HR departments have 5-10 people. How would it do if I write down Dear Mr. Smith but then Ms. Johnson who also reads apps reads my cover letter?
