Withdrawing from a semester in college for family problems?
I'm probably going to have to withdraw due to some serious family problems I've been having this semester. It's late enough in the semester so that I'll get W's in all four of my classes.
Is this a terrible idea or will it not matter? I have a 3.8 right now but there's no way I could maintain that if I tried to keep plowing through this semester.
edit: I should also add that this might cause me to have to take an extra semester, would that make me look bad? I'd graduate halfway through the 5th year.
Extra semester won't necessarily look bad. If you need to take time off and you have no other option, then do it. Four W's with a decent explanation are better then 4 F's in any circumstance.
I don't think it's a deal breaker at all. If it comes up, just tell them the truth, you had to take a semester off for personal reasons. Don't think it says anything about your intelligence or ability to do a job.
Do it. I chose to try and go to school and deal with family shit and the results were catastrophic: I did a half assed job at both and it took YEARS to fix things...and my GPA is still all shot out. Do the mature thing and prioritize, a few months is not a lot of time to make sure that rather serious issues are put to rest. Schools are very good at working with people who have family issues, and it's an easy sell for employers: "I had to deal with XYZ issue and put it to rest so that I and my family could move forward and do well." You can turn doing the right thing into a very effective marketing pitch.
Taking time away for family is completely acceptable and think of it this way: in 20 years, there's little chance you'll give two shits about your next job, if you even think about it again....but your family will still matter.
Go talk to resident / student life deans, they see this stuff all day long and may even be able to help. DO NOT think that you have to do it alone. Trust me, it's not worth it, and you'll get better results over the long term if you communicate with cooler heads who are more experienced.
As long as your grades are solid for however many semesters you have left after this one, I can't imagine the W's would hurt you if you had a good explanation (which it sounds like you do)
Is this going to make you miss OCR? That could be a problem.
