Work experience

I am a finance junior in a non target school. I still didn’t get an internship for this summer. I am looking for any type of related internship so that I can get my important internship next summer. I am interested in investment banking but I still don’t have any related work experience. Does anyone have any advice as to if I don’t get an internship this summer, what would the “best move” be or what can I do so that I can land an investment banking internship next summer? I have a great GPA but as I said before I have no work experience so I wasn’t surprised that I couldn’t land a good internship this summer. I’m not from the US so I don’t have any connections but I’m working on meeting alumni that made it to great positions. Any advice would be great!

Keep trying to get an internship this summer, even if it's less relevant than is ideal. Then keep networking and working on your technicals/interview skills and try to get a more relevant internship during the fall that you can do during school. that should help better bridge the experience gap

I can’t get an internship in the fall because my university is located in a college town so there aren’t a lot of companies here. I can only get a relative work experience but nothing big. What do you think would be the best type of work experience in my position? Really appreciate your help

It doesn't sound like you can be terribly picky so I'd cast a wide net and apply to any finance/accounting/consulting internship still open through your school's career center. Then look for local boutiques or small accounting/consulting firms in the area you're otherwise planning to be over the summer (hometown or otherwise). It helps if you are willing to be more flexible on location or if you're in a position to work for free or very little. It's getting pretty close to summer so I'd start reaching out asap

if you can't get actual work experience (even if its as simple as folding clothes at retail, or flipping burgers)...then spend your summer taking online courses...learn about internet marketing....learn a programming languages like Excel VBA, Python, SQL database (this is all free with online courses that are also essentially free). Programming builds the logical thinking skills, in addition to the actual skill of knowing the language and how to build useful things...so its actual incredibly useful....and it also makes you employable for tech jobs.

just google it...you're welcome
