Fragrance for Interview: Yes or No?
Greetings, fellow monkeys.
As an SA waiting to apply for jobs in Winter (note: I am a co-op student), I have worn relatively light fragrances for my interviews. Is this considered to be an extra boost to the interview (just like wearing a matching pocket square), provided that it is something mellow, light, and brings up confidence?
Myself, no matter what the occasion, I wear fragrance on a daily basis (I enjoy smelling good... and so does my girlfriend.) and have seen mixed feedback. Daily, light fragrances I'm using right now are Versace's The Dreamer and Dior Homme Sport.
Some say a nice, sharp scent is good. Some say it should just be avoided.
Thoughts or tips? I'm sure most of you guys have a few bottles of your own.
No and don't wear a pocket square...
I wore Sex Panther to my interviews. Had 5 interviews and 3 offers, so you could say, 60% of the time it works every time.
matching pocket square is not a boost and makes you look like a square (pun intended)
Yes this is totally the way to go. You should also wear a pink shirt, tie bar, cufflinks, suspenders, and a fedora. They will be begging for you to take the job.
Screw cologne, wear pheromones.
Depends on the region. American offices dislike it, European and Asian offices are generally ok if it's a lighter scent. Gucci Guilty, YSL Homme Sport, Burberry Weekender are light fragrances that do well. Keep in mind that fragrances smell different on different people. Might smell great on your friend but sh** on your skin. Avoid eau de parfums at all costs...unless you're in the Middle East, they love good smelling perfume.
Don't overthink it. Honestly, as long as your interviewer is not allergic to whatever you're wearing, you'll be fine. People tend to hype up "interview dress code".
I've seen someone walk into a BB in khakhis and a shirt and get an offer (I recruited in the US - and am originally from Europe). I personally like to dress it up. I wore cufflinks to all my interviews (because I like to), and I wore cologne too (because I use it everyday). I did fairly well during recruiting (I'm in consulting and got 3/3 MBB).
Everything is fine, as long as you don't go overboard with it/do it in a tacky fashion.
