Best groups at JPM London ?
Hey I was wondering what were the best groups at JPM London in terms of WLB, career prospects, learning opportunities etc I saw some threads saying that DI and TMT were great but they were dated and I'd love to get a more recent/accurate overview of what the culture's like for newcomers/SA
Also wanted to know what's the Energy group like at JPM
Any insights would be greatly appreciated !
A friend of mine has told me that his group has a culture where you have to "go get it". People won't take the initiative to speak to you or invite you to things. So you have to be very outgoing and take that initiative yourself. Haven't been there myself and that's just one person's experience in one group.
Thanks for your answer. Do you mind sharing what group your friend was in ?
Nothing changed, DI and TMT are still top groups. Note however that TMT is now split in two groups.
Thank you for your answer ! I wasn't aware of that, what was TMT split into ? And is either one of TMT/DI more demanding in terms of work hours ?
DI is usually very demanding in most places
Honestly I think going for a "top" group is not really a good idea. If you end up at GS/MS/JPM you will land interviews in PE regardless of what group you are in. A top group will pretty much always have rougher hours. You are far less likely to survive banking for 2 years if you get off at 2-4am every night vs getting off at midnight. Obviously, you will also have less time to prep for interviews. If you want to stay in banking, this is even more true as you don't have to survive the rough hours far longer. Pick an industry you think is interesting and maybe try to avoid the absolutely weakest groups.
Thanks a lot for your insights ! What you suggest makes perfect sense, I thought that going into a "top" group would increase my chances of getting a return offer or something but that might not be the case
I think I'll stick to energy if I have the opportunity
Keep in mind that energy is sometimes very sweaty. The models in energy are often far more advanced than in other industries. Also involves A LOT of data-digging as many energy companies are heavily driven by macro and demographics. I worked on a large energy deal once and the amount of data digging was just insane.
How would you rank the capital markets teams (DCM,ECM, LevFin) at JPM London in terms of culture, work-life balance, and learning?
I know that LevFin at JPM is an extremely strong group. Amongst the strongest if not the strongest LevFin team in Europe. Have a friend who works there. Not sure about ECM/DCM.
I have heard their HC group is one of the best
Not anymore - toxic work environment and their analysts don't place well with top PE funds as they don't have good deal flow.
What's DI?
Diversified Industrials
Any insight into the UK M&A team? I assume this is the Cazenove group ie corp broking and M&A. Considering applying and so would like some further insight if anyone has anything to share
Good team which runs quite lean so more responsibility for juniors. Culture is good from what I’ve heard and deal flow is decent. However, its an execution team so focuses more on closing deals rather than in-depth modelling.
what is the split between broking and actual m&a?
Anyone know if the UK teams have the same exits as emea?
yh good qn - also interested
Anyone?
Exits are the same between UK/EMEA teams, with most teams always being cross-staffed for the same experience. What you may find is EMEA people place faster, due to age and language ability, but Europeans in UK teams see the same opps their EMEA counterparts see
Work in country team often crossstaffed with industry in London. Would def say DI is solid (includes verticals including chemicals, auto, paper, logistics, etc), with solid execution and product exposure. Nice team overall. HC and Energy good but sweaty. Consumer depends who you ask. TMT is split in tech and Media&Com, nice teams overall, but not top groups.
From an exit opps perspective at JPM, top teams are DI, HC and Tech
Scratch Healthcare - no longer a top group. literally no deals.
Consumer JPM is the sweatiest team at JPM London
Has anyone actually heard the timing for when networking/placements will happen? I’m still waiting to get more info and it’s wildly unnerving
No news for the London office so far but I suppose you already know if you're on the corporate or market side though, right ?
Yeah that was clarified earlier in the process, I’m just perpetually afraid that I’m out of the loop due to the low amount of communication since signing
For FT IBD we were told that information about teams would be provided this upcoming week.
Could you PM me please, would appreciate any details
Most teams were taken by those who did the summer internship, all the "less attractive" teams are left so expect to get those
